This Week’s MMA Birthdays: Dustin Poirier Turns 25
A prototype for the modern featherweight mixed martial artist,
American Top Team’s
Dustin
Poirier will celebrate his 25th birthday on Jan. 19.
Poirier has compiled a 7-2 record since arriving in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship championship as part of the
World Extreme Cagefighting merger in 2011. A protégé of
Tim
Credeur, the Louisiana-based Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who
reached the semifinals on Season 7 of “The Ultimate Fighter,”
Poirier has secured 12 of his 15 career victories by knockout,
technical knockout or submission. He last appeared at UFC 168 in
December, when he ripped through
Diego
Brandao en route to a first-round knockout at the MGM Grand
Garden Arena in Las Vegas. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt,
Poirier was one of the primary subjects for the 2011 documentary
“Fightville,” which shined a light on the regional MMA scene in his
native Louisiana.
In 2012, “The Diamond” engaged in Sherdog.com’s “Fight of the
Year,” as he battled
Chan Sung
Jung for four rounds before being rendered unconscious with a
brabo choke. It remains the only time in Poirier’s career that he
has been finished.
