The Ultimate Fighting Championship has a new player on its lightweight roster, as Danish Olympic silver medalist Mark O. Madsen will make his debut in September.
Following rumors of Madsen's signing, the promotion confirmed on Thursday that Madsen (8-0) is joining the roster and making his debut at UFC Copenhagen, where he will face Italy's Danilo Belluardo (12-4).
The 34-year-old Madsen made his MMA debut in 2013, but after a couple of wins, he took a break from competition to focus on his Olympic career. "The Olympian" earned his nickname after competing in the Summer Olympics in 2008, 2012 and 2016 -- winning silver in the latter's men's Greco-Roman wrestling at 75 kg/165 lbs. After his return to MMA, Madsen kept on competing and winning, and in his most recent performance in June, he defeated Patrick Nielsen via first-round rear-naked choke at Olympian Fight Night.
His opponent, Belluardo, is coming off a loss in his UFC debut when he faced Joel Alvarez at UFC Fight Night 153. This defeat for "Caterpillar" snapped the 25-year-old's six-fight win streak.
UFC Copenhagen, also known as UFC Fight Night 160, is set to go down at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Sept. 28. The bill will be headlined by a middleweight clash between Jack Hermansson and Jared Cannonier.
