Figueiredo (18-1) would be the current champion had he not missed weight for his previous bout against Benavidez (28-6). After an unintentional clash of heads, the Brazilian knocked out the Xtreme Couture ace in Round 2 of their February 2020 encounter. “Daico” will look to do it again on Saturday night, only this time he made weight by coming in at 125 pounds.
Benavidez has been one of the most accomplished mixed martial artists to never win a belt inside the UFC. With a sparkling 15-4 record inside the Octagon, two of those defeats came to former flyweight king Demetrious Johnson. His three-fight win streak over Jussier Formiga, Dustin Ortiz, and Alex Perez was snapped in his last fight, but he’ll look to rebound and finally claim the title that has eluded him throughout his career. Ever the professional, the 35-year-old had no issue making weight by hitting 125 pounds on the dot.
UFC Fight Night 172’s main card will air exclusively on ESPN+ starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Prelims begin at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT and will be shown on both ESPN+ and ESPN.
