Eric Shelton vs. Jordan Espinosa

Round 1

The first fight of UFC Nashville is a flyweight bout between Eric Shelton and Jordan Espinosa. The referee for the evening’s first bout is Jimmy Neely. They touch gloves and we are underway. Espinosa lands a spinning back kick to the body of Shelton. Espinosa rushes in for a double leg but Shelton stuffs it. Espinosa bounces around and lands a straight right. He lands a low kick, and is looking good so far. Another spinning back kick by Espinosa lands. Shelton lands a straight right of his own. Low kick by Espinosa. Another straight right by Espinosa is blocked and Shelton lands a counter left hook. Shelton with a straight right. Nice combination by Espinosa with a 1-2 followed by a low kick. They exchange low kicks. Espinosa lands a low kick that hits Shelton in the groin and the referee pauses the fight. Time back in. Espinosa lands another low kick. Shelton returns fire with a body kick. Espinosa ducks under for a double leg takedown. Shelton stuffs it and Espinosa connects with a knee on the break. They exchange low kicks. Shelton lands a straight right and the round is over.

Round 2

Round two starts. Shelton lands a right hook right off the bat. Shelton pops the jab on Espinosa, and another jab. Espinosa returns with a jab of his own. He throws a body kick that Shelton catches, and he returns fire with a counter straight right. Shelton with a left hook, and he’s really starting to find his range now. Shelton with an axe kick that just misses. Shelton just misses an overhand right. Espinosa with a low kick and Shelton returns fire with a left hook. Shelton with an overhand right and he has Espinosa backing up. Shelton with a low kick. Shelton lands a right hook and briefly rocks Espinosa. Shelton with a low kick, and he just misses another overhand right. Shelton lands a left hook and tries to bear hug Espinosa but he gets away. Espinosa grabs hold of Shelton and gets a body lock takedown but Shelton gets up quickly. Shelton continues marching forward and lands a combination right before the end of the round.

Round 3

Round three begins. The referee calls time to wipe up some moisture from the mat and the fight is back in. Espinosa lands a left high kick and then pokes Shelton in the eye with his finger and the referee calls time. He tells Espinosa he will not take a point, but warns him. The doctor says Shelton is okay and the fight restarts. Shelton looks very aggressive this round and continues pressing forward. Shelton catches a kick of Espinosa and lands a counter straight right before letting go. Shelton just misses landing an overhand right. Shelton continues to pressure Espinosa. Shelton with a jab. He catches the kick of Espinosa and lands another counter straight right. Superman punch by Shelton. He continues to march forward but is missing most of the strikes he throws as Espinosa is circling away from his power hand. 30 seconds left and this fight could go either way. Shelton with a left hook, straight right combination. He continues to march forward and the round and fight are over.

Round 1

The next fight is a bantamweight bout between Ryan MacDonald and Chris Gutierrez. The referee is Ricky Parker. Gutierrez lands a low kick. Gutierrez checks a low kick by MacDonald and returns fire with a high kick. Another low kick by Gutierrez, and then he lands a body kick. Gutierrez is doing a great job of controlling the center of the Octagon. He continues to press forward and lands a brutal kick to the body of MacDonald. Gutierrez with a left hook. He lands a vicious straight right to the body of MacDonald. Gutierrez with another low kick and MacDonald counters with a straight right. MacDonald lands a chopping low kick of his own. MacDonald with a spinning back kick. The 10-second clapper rings, Gutierrez just misses landing a spinning back elbow, and the round is over.

Round 2

The second round begins. MacDonald appears to have a huge cut on his left knee as well as one on his forehead. Gutierrez with another low kick. That’s been money for him the entire fight. Gutierrez with another low kick. Gutierrez with another hard kick to the body. He is just lighting up MacDonald with kicks to the legs and body. Gutierrez lands another hard low kick and MacDonald stumbles backwards. Gutierrez with a high kick and then a spinning back kick to the body. Gutierrez lands an elbow and MacDonald ducks down for a double leg takedown. Gutierrez stuffs it and MacDonald jumps back to his feet. Another hard low kick by Gutierrez. He is just destroying MacDonald’s legs with those. MacDonald finally catches a kick of Gutierrez and he presses him against the fence but Gutierrez escapes. Another hard low kick by Gutierrez and MacDonald desperately dives down for a single leg which Gutierrez escapes from. A hard body shot by Gutierrez follows and the second round is over.

Round 3

The third round begins. They embrace after a hard-fought bout so far. MacDonald is a bloody mess at this point and needs to go for broke. Gutierrez rips another low kick. Gutierrez with a spinning back kick. Another hard body kick by Gutierrez lands to the midsection of MacDonald. MacDonald now takes the center of the Octagon himself but he needs a finish at this point. Gutierrez has been way more active with the kicks and that’s been the difference so far in this one. MacDonald is a bloody mess right now. He moves forward to try and clinch up Gutierrez but he throws him to the side. MacDonald has one minute left to get a finish. Gutierrez tries to take MacDonald down with a flying kneebar but MacDonald stuffs it and throws him to the mat. There isn’t enough time left in the round for MacDonald to attempt any submissions and the fight is over.

Round 1

It’s time for a women’s strawweight bout between Randa Markos and Angela Hill. The official in charge of the action is Keith Peterson. No touch of gloves for this one. Hill with a kick to the body. Markos with a straight right and uses it to get inside and clinch up with Hill. But Hill reverses position and now has Markos up against the fence. Markos lands two knees and then an elbow off the break. She marches forward on Hill, who clinches up with her but Markos whips her to the ground with a body lock takedown. Markos is now working in side control. She moves over into mount and then takes the back of Hill. Markos is looking for the rear-naked choke while also landing punches to the head of Hill. She moves back into mount. Hill tries to buck her off but Markos gets her hooks in and takes the back of Hill. She switches to an armbar and Hill is in massive trouble now. Hill is doing her best to defend but Markos has a minute to work here. Hill is doing a great job of defending but eventually succumbs to the submission as Markos stretches the arm back and Hill taps to the armbar.

Alexis Davis vs. Jennifer Maia

Round 1

Up next is a women’s flyweight bout between Alexis Davis and Jennifer Maia. The referee is Herb Dean. No touch of gloves for this one. Davis with a jab and Maia returns with one of her own. Maia with another hard jab. Maia lands a straight right. Davis clinches up with Maia and shoves her against the fence. She lands some elbows and Maia breaks from the clinch. They go back into the center of the Octagon and Davis clinches up Maia once again and pushes her back against the cage. They break and Maia lands a hard uppercut. She lands a knee and Davis is hurt. Maia with a straight right and Davis looks rocked badly. She tries to land a desperation double leg takedown but Maia stuffs it. Davis goes back into the center of the Octagon and Maia is lighting her up with punches. She lands a nice uppercut. It looks like Davis has recovered but she continues to eat punches. Davis moves into the clinch once again. Maia lands some knees from the clinch. She reverses position and has Davis against the fence. Maia continues to land knees from the clinch. Davis returns with knees of her own but the round is soon over.

Round 2

Round two begins. They get up close and each fighters throws hooks at each other. Davis lands a low kick. Maia lands a straight right. She lands a right hook. Davis with a kick to the body. Maia continues to work off her jab with a straight right behind it. Davis catches a kick from Maia and uses it to get her to the mat and land on top. Davis moves into full mount and lands some ground and pound from the top. Maia shrimps and gets back into half guard but Davis remains strong on top. Davis is still in half guard and is looking for a keylock but Maia is doing a admirable job of defending. Davis continues to land punches from the top while controlling Maia on the mat. She continues to land punches from top position until the bell rings for the end of the round.

Round 3

The third round begins and it’s almost surely tied up one round each. Davis with the jab. Maia ducks down and lands a right hook. Maia with a jab of her own, and then a left hook. Davis lands a kick to the body. Maia with another left hook. Maia lands a straight right after a body kick by Davis. Another low kick lands by Davis. This is a really close fight. They are in the center of the Octagon up close just trading heavy punches and kicks at each other. Maia with a counter right hand and then she pops Davis in the face with a jab. Maia nearly lands an overhand right off of a failed body kick by Davis. Now Davis lands a body kick. Low kick by Davis. Maia with a nice straight right. Davis lands another low kick, which has been money for her this whole fight. Maia with a heavy jab. Davis with a body kick. Another low kick by Davis. She moves in close on Maia and gets her in the clinch. Maia escapes from the clinch and they are back in the center of the Octagon. One final kick to the body and the round and fight are over. Close fight.

Marlon Vera vs. Frankie Saenz

Round 1

It’s now time for a bantamweight bout between Marlon Vera and Frankie Saenz. The referee is Jimmy Neely. They touch gloves and the fight is on. Vera with a body kick early but Saenz catches it and throws him away. Saenz with a low kick and then moves away from the counter of Vera. Saenz appears to be much smaller and will have to work to get inside. Saenz looks to land a straight right but Vera uses his long reach to clip Saenz with a jab that drops him. Saenz drops down for a single leg takedown in desperation but Vera falls on top of him as Saenz is rocked badly from the jab. As Saenz clings to his leg, Vera hammers at the head of Saenz with short, hard punches including a couple to the back of the head. The referee has to jump in and stop the fight, giving Vera a quick first-round knockout win.

Bryce Mitchell vs. Bobby Moffett

Round 1

The final preliminary card bout is a featherweight fight between Bobby Moffett and Bryce Mitchell. The referee is Ricky Parker. No touch of gloves between these two. Mitchell takes the center of the Octagon right away and lands a kick to the body. He nearly lands a head kick that is blocked by Moffett, who fires back with a left hook. Mitchell nearly lands another head kick that is blocked. Mitchell with a straight right that drops Moffett. But Moffett recovers quickly and gets a single leg takedown. Mitchell escapes and is back on the feet but Moffett drags him back down the ground. On the ground Mitchell nearly takes the back of Moffett but Moffett sweeps him and gets on top. Mitchell locks in a triangle from the bottom and is working to submit Moffett. Mitchell transitions into an armbar and Moffett appears to be in serious trouble but is able to scramble and escape. They are both back on the feet now. Moffett with a short right hook that hurts Mitchell. He is backing up Mitchell against the fence but Mitchell changes levels and is looking for a double leg takedown. Moffett stuffs it and they break. Moffett moves forward and Mitchell lands a straight right. Moffett clinches Mitchell against the fence. Mitchell swaps positions along the fence but there’s 10 seconds left and not enough time to do anything. The round is over.

Round 2

Round two begins. Mitchell with a hard body kick to the midsection of Moffett. Now Moffett changes levels and lands a double leg takedown. He’s on top of Mitchell on the ground and is landing some hard ground and pound. Moffett has Mitchell pressed into the corner of the Octagon and is looking to take the back of Mitchell. But Mitchell is able to scramble and stand back up. They are back in the center of the Octagon. Mitchell with a spinning back kick. Mitchell with a jab. Moffett is walking forward but Mitchell is doing a good job of landing on him as he backs up. Moffett closes the distance and lands a body lock takedown. He’s on top of Mitchell up against the cage now. Moffett is looking for his signature move, the Brabo choke. He has it locked in tight. Mitchell is trying to escape but Moffett isn’t letting go. Finally Moffett is forced to let go of the choke attempt. In a scramble Mitchell takes the back of Moffett and he puts him in the crucifix position. Mitchell switches to an inverted armbar but Moffett is able to scramble and get out of it. Moffett ends up on top and the round is over.

Round 3

Third and final round begins. Moffett starts off with a jab but Mitchell lands a left hook that pushes Moffett backwards. Moffett changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown but Mitchell stuffs it. Moffett changes levels again and this time gets the double leg. Moffett is on top and Mitchell attempts an armbar but Moffett is able to scramble out of it and land in mount. Mitchell gets him into half guard and uses it to stand back up. They are back on the feet now. Mitchell lands a right hook on Moffett, who fails on a body lock takedown attempt. But Moffett continues to power forward and lands a double leg takedown. Moffett is on top of Mitchell working in half guard. Moffett lands some ground and pound and then looks to lock in the Brabo choke once again. Mitchell is able to scramble out of it and reverse position. He takes the back of Moffett and has a rear-naked choke locked in super tight. It looks like Moffett is able to slip out of the choke but Mitchell still has his back. He is looking to adjust his arm and get the choke but Moffett slips out of it. Moffett is able to stand back up to his feet and the round and fight are over.

Aldrich just misses landing a long straight left. Barber just misses landing a straight left of her own. Aldrich lands another hard jab. Another straight left by Aldrich. Barber with a body kick. Another jab by Aldrich. That’s been her best weapon this whole round. Barber just misses landing a high kick. Barber looks to land a body kick but Aldrich catches it, lands a counter straight left, and throws Barber to the mat. Barber gets back up. Aldrich continues to press forward and the round is soon over.

Barber lands a long straight left and has Aldrich rocked bad. Barber moves forward swinging wild hooks but Aldrich grabs a hold of her in the clinch and pushes her against the fence. Barber reverses position and hurts Aldrich with another punch. She starts teeing off on Aldrich with knees and punches against the fence and the referee is forced to step in for a standing TKO.

Luis Pena vs. Steven Peterson

Round 1

The next fight is a featherweight bout between Steven Peterson and Luis Pena. The official in charge of the action is Herb Dean. Peterson with a superman punch attempt right off the bat. He pushes forward and throws a straight right and uses it as a chance to get inside. Peterson has Pena against the fence and is looking for a body lock takedown. Peterson switches to a single leg takedown and completes it. Pena grabs hold of Peterson’s arm and stands up. But Peterson locks on the armbar on Pena, who slams him to the ground. Pena is now on top Peterson landing long punches. Pena dives into the guard of Peterson and is working on top. Peterson threatens with a leg lock and Pena stands back up but heads back down when he sees and opening. Pena and Peterson both get back up. Pena hits Peterson with a punch as he gets up. He now has Peterson against the fence and is punishing him with knees and elbows. Peterson is fighting back but looks rocked. They break. Peterson with a straight right the body. Pena returns with a straight left. Peterson with a low kick. Pena just misses a flying knee. Peterson with another low kick. Pena with a counter straight left down the pipe. Peterson closes the distance and is looking for a late body lock takedown. Peterson switches to a single leg takedown but can’t get it. Pena connects on a knee off the break and the round is over.

Round two begins. Peterson pushes forward right away once again. Pena is doing a better job of using his reach as he moves backwards. Peterson gets inside and dumps Pena to the mat with a double leg takedown. Pena gets back up but Peterson takes his back in a scramble and is working from the backpack position. Pena shrugs him off and starts teeing off on Peterson with punches against the fence. Pena with a right hook and he pushes Peterson back against the fence. Peterson switches position along the fence and once again dumps Pena to the mat with a double leg takedown. But once again Pena stands back up. And once again, Peterson dumps him to the mat with a double leg takedown. Pena gets back up but Peterson is clinging to him with a body lock. Pena breaks and lands a right hook. Peterson appears to be hurt but is hanging in touch. They are back in the center of the Octagon and Pena lands a flying knee. Pena with a right hook the body. Peterson misses a spinning back elbow. Pena with a body kick and he’s doing a much better job of using his reach now. But Peterson closes the distance and pushes Pena against the cage. Pena switches position and is now shoving Peterson. They break and throw some more punches before the round comes to an end.

Round 3

Round three begins. Peterson appears to be very tired at this point. Pena lands a hard uppercut and just misses landing a head kick that would have knocked Peterson out. Peterson continues to swing wild punches but they don’t have much punching power behind them. Peterson closes the distance and pushes Pena against the fence. He is looking for a single leg takedown but Pena reverses position. Peterson lands a hard knee from the clinch and they break. Peterson with a straight right off the break. He lands a low kick on Pena and pushes him against the cage. Peterson is looking for a double leg takedown but Pena is defending it well. Pena is looking for a kimura from his back but Peterson escapes and is now in full guard with over two minutes left to work. Pena sweeps Peterson and lands on top of him. Peterson is working from bottom position, landing hard elbows on Pena. He nearly locks in an armbar but Pena slips out. Peterson has Pena in a leg lock but Pena lands hard punches from the top. Peterson stands up but Pena lands a high kick that rocks him. Peterson clinches Pena up against the fence and looks for a late takedown. Pena reverses position and rides out the clinch until the round and fight are over. Great fight!

It’s a feeling-out period to start the fight as neither man lands a strike in the first minute. da Silva finally lands a counter straight right as Figueiredo moves in. Figueiredo lands a hard kick to the body. Hard low kick by Figueiredo and da Silva responds with a counter straight left. Figueiredo with a spinning back kick and he uses it to get inside and clinch da Silva against the fence. They break. Da Silva with a straight right. He changes levels and lands a double leg takedown. Da Silva works from top and moves into half guard. Figueiredo is able to get back to his feet but Formiga is pushing him against the fence. Da Silva trips Figueiredo and lands on top in mount. He lands some hard punches and elbows from top before the end of the round.

Figueiredo needs a knockout if he wants to win this fight. Figueiredo has taken control of the center of the Octagon but da Silva is doing a good job circling. Da Silva changes levels for a double leg takedown and Figueiredo pulls guard. Da Silva moves into half guard and has two minutes left to work. He is trying to move into full mount and achieves it. Figueiredo bucks him off and gets back into guard. Figueiredo scrambles back to his feet but da Silva clings to him like glue against the fence. Figueiredo breaks. He is now moving forward and he knows he needs a knockout but only has 30 seconds left. He can’t land anything and the fight is over.

Round 1

The next bout is a lightweight matchup between John Makdessi and Jesus Pinedo. The third man in the Octagon is Herb Dean. They touch gloves. Pinedo throws a high kick that Makdessi blocks. Makdessi marches forward and lands a side kick. Pinedo throws a high kick that is blocked and caught by Makdessi. The crowd begins to boo and not much is happening in this round so far. Makdessi with a spinning back kick. Makdessi with a body kick that is blocked by Pinedo. Makdessi with a low kick that nearly drops Pinedo. The crowd is booing heavy now as neither man is willing to engage. They exchange low kicks. At the 10-second clapper Makdessi moves forward and lands another low kick and the round is soon over.

Round 2

Round two starts. Makdessi with another kick to the body. Makdessi continues to land low kicks periodically, but the crowd is really booing hard now. Pinedo is just circling around doing absolutely nothing. Makdessi with a side kick. He throws a high kick that Pinedo blocks. The crowd continues to boo. Pinedo just misses landing a high kick. Makdessi lands a side kick. Makdessi with another high kick that’s blocked. Neither man has thrown a punch this entire round. Makdessi lands another low kick. Pinedo finally comes on strong and starts to throw some hands late. He lands a high kick and misses on a flying knee and he may have stole the round back. Very uneventful fight so far, however.

Round 3

Third and final round begins and Makdessi is likely ahead two rounds to none on the cards. Once again the round starts off very slow as both men are very unwilling to engage. Makdessi continues to pepper Pinedo with low kicks as Pinedo continues to circle away. Referee Herb Dean warns Pinedo to engage. Pinedo finally starts to walk forward but doesn’t actually throw any strikes. Makdessi’s low kicks are going to win him this tedious fight. Pinedo lands a right hook but it does not damage. Pinedo throws a body kick but Makdessi catches it and throws him to the mat. Another low kick by Makdessi lands. Another body kick attempt by Pinedo is caught by Makdessi, who lands another low kick. Pinedo is trying to egg him on but Makdessi is content to play his point-fighting game. Makdessi with a jab, and Pinedo returns with a low kick. Makdessi with a high kick and a spinning back kick and after a last-second flurry the fight is soon over.

Curtis Blaydes vs. Justin Willis

Round 1

The co-main event is heavyweight bout between Curtis Blaydes and Justin Willis. Keith Peterson is the ref. Blaydes with a hard low kick right off the bat. Blaydes changes levels and shoots in for a double leg takedown. He switches to a single leg but Willis defends it well. Blaydes lands a body lock takedown and lands on top of Willis in full mount. Willis scrambles but Willis is on his back holding him to the mat. Blaydes lands some heavy punches from on top. Willis stands up but Blaydes suplexes him back to the mat. Willis gets up but Blaydes drags him back down to the mat. Some big knees by Blaydes to the thighs of Willis. Blaydes is just holding Willis to the mat at this point. Willis gets back up but once again Blaydes drags him to the mat. He lands some ground and pound and holds him to the mat until the round is over.

Round 2

Round two begins. Blaydes connects with a straight right and Willis is hurt. Blaydes gets him back into the clinch and once again slams him back to the mat. Blaydes is looking to move back into mount position. Blaydes is just riding Willis on the mat now. Willis is able to get back to his feet but Blaydes continues to ride him and land heavy knees. Willis simply cannot get up and Blaydes drags him back down to the mat. Blaydes continues to land heavy knees on an exhausted and worn out Willis until the end of the round. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Round 3

The third and final round begins. They finally exchange on the feet, and each man lands some hard hooks on each other. This is heavyweight MMA and one punch can end the fight, so Blaydes still has to be concerned even though he’s up both rounds at this point. Blaydes shoots for a single leg takedown but Willis stuffs it. Blaydes changes levels again and pushes Willis against the fence looking for a double leg takedown. Willis is able to defend it but Blaydes continues to push him against the fence. Willis is finally able to break free, but Blaydes changes levels again and lands a strong double leg takedown. Blaydes land in side control and has a minute left to work. Blaydes stays busy landing some heavy ground and pound. Blaydes continues to ride Willis on the mat until the final bell for a dominant victory.

Round 1

We’ve arrived at our final fight of the evening, a five-round welterweight bout between Stephen Thompson and Anthony Pettis. The referee is Herb Dean. They touch gloves and the fight begins. Thompson begins with a body kick. Expect lots of kicks from both men tonight. Pettis lands a kick to the body of his own. Another hard body kick by Pettis. Low kick by Pettis. He marches forward and lands another low kick. Good start to the fight by Pettis. Thompson returns fire with a side kick. Straight left by Thompson just misses. Body kick by Thompson and Pettis returns with a low kick. Another hard body kick by Pettis lands. He’s looking good so far. Pettis misses wildly on a spinning wheel kick. Thompson with another side kick, and then a high kick followed by a 1-2 combination. Pettis with a straight right that just misses the chin of Thompson. Another low kick by Pettis and a spinning back kick in return by Thompson. Another body kick by Thompson and Pettis returns with a low kick. Thompson with a straight left down the pipe and the first round is soon over.

Round 2

Round two begins. Pettis marches forward and lands another body kick. Thompson with a high kick that’s blocked. Pettis moves forward and lands a right cross to the body. Thompson with a side kick to the head of Pettis. Thompson lands a low kick of his own. Pettis’ face is bleeding badly now as the jab of Thompson is eating up his scar tissue. Thompson with a straight left and he circles away. Thompson continues to land low kicks as Pettis moves forward. Thompson is really picking him apart this round. It’s just Pettis moving forward with Thompson countering him. The 10-second clapper rings and out of nowhere Pettis lands an absolutely brutal superman punch off the cage and knocks Thompson out! He follows Thompson to the ground and lands a couple unnecessary blows before the referee pushes him off. What a massive knockout by Pettis, who was the biggest underdog on the entire card. What a way to end the night.
