According to ESPN, both Chiesa and Sanchez have verbally agreed to the bout, which will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 6. UFC 239 is headlined by a light heavyweight championship bout between Jon Jones and Thiago Santos and will also see Amanda Nunes defend her bantamweight crown against Holly Holm in the co-main event.
Chiesa, who won Season 15 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” made a successful welterweight debut at UFC 232, where he submitted former interim champion Carlos Condit with a kimura 56 seconds into the second round of their bout. Prior to that, “Maverick” had dropped back-to-back contests at the hands of Anthony Pettis and Kevin Lee at 155 pounds.
A winner on the inaugural season of “TUF,” Sanchez has experienced a small resurgence of late. After losing three of four bouts — all via KO or TKO — from July 2016 to November 2017, the Jackson-Wink MMA stalwart has posted back-to-back triumphs over Craig White and Mickey Gall in his last two Octagon appearances.
