Source: Visa Issues Force Tyrone Spong to Withdraw From WSOF 3 Co-Main Event
Tyrone Spong will not be able to compete at World Series of Fighting 3 due to visa issues, a source close to the promotion revealed to Sherdog.com on Monday.
The Surinamese-born Dutchman was expected to meet Tachi Palace Fights veteran Angel DeAnda in a light heavyweight bout in Las Vegas on June 14. Instead, Spong will likely compete on an August WSOF card, according to the source. The Las Vegas-based promotion has yet to formally announce Spong’s withdrawal from the bout, which was expected to serve as the evening’s co-headliner.
WSOF 3 is headlined by a welterweight clash between Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman. The show’s four-bout main card airs on NBC Sports Network and also includes a heavyweight showdown between Rolles Gracie and Dave Huckaba, as well as a lightweight tussle pitting Justin Gaethje against Brian Cobb.
Spong made his mixed martial arts debut in November, knocking out Travis Bartlett 3:15 into the opening frame at WSOF 1. An accomplished kickboxer with a 69-6-1 career record, the Blackzilians representative returned to that arena on March 23, when he knocked out Remy Bonjasky in the second round at Glory 5 in London.
