Masvidal Slams Teammate Covington's 'Not Even Remotely Funny' Comment on Matt Hughes

It’s nothing new that Colby Covington’s statements can be divisive, but apparently their effect extends even to those who are usually his staunch allies.

“Chaos” booked himself a shot at Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Kamaru Usman later this year after he steamrolled former champ Robbie Lawler in the main event at UFC Newark. In his post-fight interview, Covington said that Lawler should have taken a lesson from his friend and UFC Hall-of-Famer Matt Hughes who was severely injured in 2017 when a train hit the car he was in.

“Let’s talk about the lesson we learned tonight. It’s a strong lesson, Robbie should have learned a lesson from his buddy Matt Hughes,” Covington said. “You stay off the tracks when the train is coming through, junior. Doesn’t matter if it’s the Trump train or the Colby train, get out the way.”

Covington’s friend, American Top Team teammate and fellow welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal professed to be unaware of those comments, and surprised when a fan brought them to his attention at a recent Q&A session. (transcript by MMA News)

“He did? I didn’t see that. That’s not even remotely funny,” Masvidal said. “That’s the stupidest sh-t I’ve ever heard if that’s real.

“Super distasteful.” he added. “Whatever, that’s kinda stupid of him.”
