Jon Jones Rips ‘Delusional’ Dominick Reyes for Questioning Athletic Talent of Past Foes

The ordering process for Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-views has changed: UFC 247 is only available on ESPN+ in the U.S.

When Dominick Reyes questioned the athletic ability of Jon Jones’ previous foes, the reigning light heavyweight champion couldn’t resist launching an all-out Twitter assault on his UFC 247 opponent.

During an episode of UFC Countdown promoting Saturday’s event, Reyes claimed Jones “has never fought anyone with my sports IQ; he’s fought wrestlers, he’s fought strikers but never athletes.”

Jones fired back shortly thereafter. “Probably the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a while,” he wrote. The champion’s resume includes a who’s who at light heavyweight, and he went on to tout their athletic accomplishments while poking fun at Reyes’ failed NFL dreams.

“[Daniel Cormier] competed in the NCAA finals and in the Olympics, [Ovince Saint Preux] played Division I football, [Ryan] Bader the current double champ of Bellator, Vitor [Belfort] crazy speed and explosive, Lyoto [Machida] had been striking since age 5, Glover [Teixeira] was on a 20 fight win streak but none of those guys are athletes I guess,” Jones said.

Dominick Reyes, one of the greatest athletes in Apple Valley history. Being a big fish in a small pond for so long has really gone to his head. Beating up on cans has got him convinced he’s a better athlete than most of the world,” he continued. “If he was so badass he would’ve won the California state wrestling championships, he would’ve went [Division I], He would have at least made a practice squad for the NFL. This man is delusional.”

A California native, Reyes is unbeaten thus far in 12 professional bouts, with notable wins over the likes of Chris Weidman, Volkan Oezdemir, St. Preux and Jared Cannonier. Jones, of course, has never suffered a true defeat in his 27-bout tenure — though he lost one fight due to disqualification and had another victory overturned to a no contest.

UFC 247 takes place at the Toyota Center in Houston on Saturday and airs on pay-per-view through ESPN+. Advertisement
