Heavyweights Josh Barnett, Frank Mir Slated to Clash at UFC 164

Heavyweight submission specialists Josh Barnett and Frank Mir will meet at 164, promotion officials announced Wednesday.

UFC 164 takes place Aug. 31 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee and will also feature a pair of pivotal featherweight collisions, as Chad Mendes meets Clay Guida and Dustin Poirier faces Erik Koch.

Barnett, 35, recently signed to return to the UFC after an 11-year stretch away from the organization, during which “The Warmaster” competed for the likes of Pancrase, Pride and Strikeforce. A winner in nine of his last 10 fights, the catch-wrestler last competed on Jan. 12, when he finished overmatched Austrian Nandor Guelmino with an arm-triangle choke at Strikeforce’s final event.

Like Barnett, Mir is a former UFC heavyweight champion, though it has been more than four years since Mir held any gold. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt saw a three-fight winning streak snapped last year in a failed title bid against Junior dos Santos and was most recently outpointed by the undefeated Daniel Cormier last month at UFC on Fox 7.
