Nogueira, Davis on Point for UFN 24
Brian Knapp Mar 25, 2011
In a scene that has played out over and over again in mixed martial
arts, old guard will test new when Antonio
Rogerio Nogueira answers the bell against Phil
Davis.
The world-ranked Nogueira tipped the scales at 206 pounds for his duel with Davis (206) in the UFC Fight Night 24 main event on Saturday at the KeyArena in Seattle. The six other men slated for main card duty, including co-headliners Dan Hardy (171) and Anthony Johnson (171), also met their contracted weight requirements without incident at Friday’s official weigh-in.
A 2005
Pride Fighting Championships middleweight grand prix
quarterfinalist, Nogueira last appeared at UFC 119 in September,
when he lost a unanimous decision to “The Ultimate Fighter” Season
8 winner Ryan Bader at
the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis; the defeat snapped his
seven-fight winning streak. The 34-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu
black belt counts high-profile wins over reigning Strikeforce
heavyweight champion Alistair
Overeem (twice), current Strikeforce light heavyweight boss
Dan
Henderson, former International Fight League light heavyweight
titleholder Vladimir
Matyushenko and Japanese icon Kazushi
Sakuraba. Nogueira has never lost back-to-back fights in his
10-year career.
Davis will enter the bout unbeaten in eight professional outings, four of them inside the Octagon. The 26-year-old Harrisburg, Pa., native won an NCAA wrestling championship at Penn State University in 2008 and has quickly established himself as one of MMA’s top prospects at 205 pounds. Davis has not fought since UFC 123 in November, when he submitted Tim Boetsch with a modified kimura at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Mich. Victories over former WEC light heavyweight champion Brian Stann and Swedish import Alexander Gustafsson anchor his unblemished resume.
UFC Fight Night 24 -- which also features a welterweight tilt pitting “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 winner Amir Sadollah (170) against “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 finalist DaMarques Johnson (171) and a featherweight rematch pairing Leonard Garcia (145) with Chan Sung Jung (146) -- will air on Spike TV at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The UFC will stream five undercard bouts on its Facebook page at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT: Sean McCorkle (266) vs. Christian Morecraft (265), Jon Madsen (261) vs. Mike Russow (256), John Hathaway (171) vs. Kris McCray (170), Michael McDonald (135) vs. Edwin Figueroa (136) and Alex Caceres (146) vs. Mackens Semerzier (146).
