“[Mayweather and McGregor] submitted waivers for the chairman and commissioners to listen to their reasoning why we should deviate from our regulations from 10-ounce gloves to 8-ounce gloves,” Bennett told Sherdog.com via email.
Mayweather and McGregor will square off in a 10-round, 154-pound bout at the T-Mobile Arena. The combatants initially agreed to wear 10-ounce gloves for the contest, which is standard for fights at 147 pounds and above in Nevada. Meanwhile, eight-ounce gloves are utilized for bouts taking place at 135 pounds and below. Matchups between 135 and 147 pounds can utilize either eight- or 10-ounce gloves, depending on what both parties agree to use.
Both Mayweather and McGregor have traded barbs on social media recently regarding the size of the gloves. McGregor, the UFC lightweight champion, is accustomed to wearing four-ounce gloves in the Octagon. Mayweather, meanwhile, seemed unfazed by potentially using smaller gloves.
“Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I’m willing to accommodate,” he wrote. “Let’s give the boxing and MMA fans what they want to see.”
