Heavyweight Prospect Miocic Draws Beltran for Oct. 8 UFC Debut

Unbeaten heavyweight Stipe Miocic will make his Octagon debut against fellow slugger Joey Beltran at UFC 136.

UFC officials announced Wednesday that both Miocic (Pictured) and Beltran have verbally agreed to the bout, which will take place Oct. 8 at Toyota Center in Houston.

The UFC 136 pay-per-view is expected to be headlined by a championship doubleheader, with Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo defending their respective 155- and 145-pound belts against Gray Maynard and Kenny Florian.

A product of Ohio’s Strong Style Fight Team, Miocic inked a multi-fight deal with the UFC in June. The 28-year-old is a former NCAA Division I wrestler and baseball player at Cleveland State University who in June captured the North American Allied Fight Series heavyweight title. Since turning pro in February 2010, Miocic has stopped all six of his opponents on strikes, three inside the first round.

Beltran, 29, has never been knocked out and has been submitted only once in 18 fights. The “Mexicutioner” entered the UFC in February 2010 on the heels of a knockout over Houston Alexander, and subsequently rattled off a pair of wins over Tim Hague and Rolles Gracie. Beltran then dropped back-to-back decisions to Matt Mitrione and Pat Barry, but rebounded in June with a decisive third-round finish of UFC newcomer Aaron Rosa.
