The Coronavirus Chronicles: Daniel Madrid

The ordering process for Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-views has changed: UFC 249 is only available on ESPN+ in the U.S.

Daniel Madrid missed out on a monumental opportunity when Legacy Fighting Alliance 84 was postponed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He missed out on a main event title fight and the sort of platform that has helped many previous LFA alums catapult themselves into the Ultimate Fighting Championship. However, the 35-year-old former King of the Cage champion has taken the setback in stride while leaning on a trait that he believes has been pivotal throughout his career: patience.

“For anybody else, I could definitely see a level of frustration coming from that, where it hinders your entire plans for the coming year, but for me, I’ve been in this game for over 16 years,” Madrid told Sherdog.com. “Patience has been a virtue for me. If I’ve got to wait a little bit longer, then so be it. Am I bummed out that I didn’t get to fight for that title and bring it home where it rightfully belongs? Absolutely, but I know that everyone that’s staffed in LFA [are] loyal to their word. When this pandemic gets done with, they’re already looking to set everything up [and] reschedule fights. I know my title fight will be there. It’s patience. I’m good with it. I’ll just stay training, doing what I’ve been doing for the last 16 years.”

In this exclusive interview with Sherdog, Madrid discussed the days leading up to his event’s postponement, whether or not the loss of a payday will become a financial burden in the coming months and how mandated closings have impacted him and his family.
