Gerald Meerschaert Sees a Mirror Image in Opponent Ed Herman

With so much diversity on the Ultimate Fighting Championship roster, it’s not often you’ll get a booking where two fighters seem like sides of the same coin. But at UFC Fight Night 173 in Las Vegas, fans will see just that when Gerald Meerschaert and Ed Herman step into the Octagon. The commonalities between the two are so obvious, that even Meerschaert could not deny it in his conversation with Sherdog.

“We’re very similar. The only thing that’s different is that we are opposite stance. Both [of us] like walking forward. The stand-up is not anything flashy but it’s very technically sound. Real basic stuff. Both fight good in the clinch, and he’s also a black belt [in Brazilian jiu-jitsu]. He’s not going to do any outlandish, crazy jiu-jitsu tricks. It’s I’m going to get on top of you, I’m going to hit you, and when I see an opening I’m going to try and choke you out. It’s funny for me, because usually I’m the vet. But this time I’m fighting a guy; this dude’s been in the UFC longer than I’ve been fighting. So, for me that’s very weird.”

In his discussion with Sherdog, “GM3” spoke in detail about his bout on Saturday night with “Short Fuse,” as well as the reasons why he is taking the fight on just over a weeks’ notice.
