Bruce Boyington vs. Saul Almeida

Round 1

The two land few decent punches early, each switching from orthodox to southpaw. Boyington tags his foe with a pair of stinging leg kicks but doesn’t follow them up with anything. Boyington misses a spinning back kick because he’s too close, allowing Almeida to easily shoot in and drag him to the canvas. Almeida quickly scoots to full mount, pinning Bruce to the canvas. Boyington latches on a kimura while he’s mounted but he doesn’t have the angle to land the submission. With the arm locked, Boyington looks to sweep and eventually scrambles out and quickly seizes Almeida’s back. Saul stands but he can’t shake his adversary off, who secures a body triangle. Almeida spins out and dumps Boyington and in the ensuing scramble, it’s now Almeida who takes the back and locks in a body triangle of his own. Almeida fishes for an armbar but time expires before he can land it. It’s a good, close round. 10-9 Boyington

Round 2

Almeida circles around the cage with his arms dropped to his sides, looking to sucker his foe in. Boyington is cautious, though he fiddles with a few low kicks. Finally, Bruce opens up with a series of stinging kicks to the thighs, but Almeida has other plans and shoots in. Boyington sprawls nicely but he’s pressed with his back against the cage. Finally, Almeida drags him to the canvas and is looking to take the back, but Boyington is thwarting all forward progress for now. Boyington is taken all the way down now but Almeida can’t keep him there as the two spring back to their feet at the midway point. Again, Almeida shoots in and lands the takedown and almost immediately Boyington fishes for the kimura off his back. Almeida secures full mount while defending the submission and though Boyington is still looking for the tap, he’s essentially lost it. Almeida can’t improve from mount and eventually slithers to his foe’s back and locks in another body triangle. 10-9 Almeida

Round 3

Boyington is walking after Almeida early but he’s quickly taken down. Boyington scoots his back to the cage, looking to wall walk back up to his feet. Almeida is in his opponent’s full guard, not looking to pass to either side while Bruce is tapping the Brazilian with meager punches from his back. Boyington shrimps to his left in an attempt to scramble out, but Almeida follows him and snakes his way to his foe’s back. Again, Almeida locks on a body triangle and is looking for a rear-naked choke, though Bruce is fending it off. Boyington turtles up at the midway point but he can’t shake the lankier fighter off. Boyington rolls over and eventually stands up, towering over Almeida and dishes out a few punches. Almeida misses a desperate heel hook from his back he’s able to sweep Boyington off his feet. Almeida again fishes for a heel hook but he misses it again. With 30 seconds left, Boyington explodes out and seizes Saul’s back, looking for the rear-naked choke. Time runs out and ends a very, very close round. 10-9 Boyington

Hood comes in and tags him with an overhand right, but King takes it well. After a brief exchange, Hood stumbles back after tasting a short right hook. He quickly recovers and resets but King drills him with a nasty kick to the leg. Hood grimaces and limps off to his left. He is in pain but just when it seems like he’s recovered, another thwacking shin to his left leg forces him to grimace and stumble away. King is staying back, but he lands two more decent low kicks to that weakened leg with two minutes left. King completely backs off, ignoring the injured leg and eats a few right hands late. For whatever reason, King lets Hood completely off the hook and doesn’t attack the injured leg for the final 90 seconds of the round. 10-9 King

Round 2

King starts the frame off with a slapping low kick to Hood’s leg. King opts to shoot in for a single and gets it, but Hood latches onto the larger-bearded fella’s neck and reverse him, landing on top in half guard. They scramble and Hood springs to his feet, where he blasts his foe with a nice laser of a right hand to the dome. King shakes it off and regroups before he drills his foe with a pair of nasty low kicks again. Hood is hobbling around but he’s hanging in there. Hood delivers a thudding kick King’s belly and it hurts him. They trade blows but King is blasted by a foot to the groin. He takes about 30 minutes before opting to continue. The Denver-based wrestler takes them both well but doesn’t retaliate in time. There is a break in the action as Miragliotta has Ivanov’s gash inspected by the ringside doctor.
