Weekend Rundown: Severn, 52, Notches 94th Victory

UFC hall of famer Dan Severn stopped Chad Olmstead on second-round punches at King of the Cage “Lock Down” on Friday at the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The end came 1:27 into round two, as Severn scored the 94th victory of his career.

A four-time collegiate All-American wrestler at Arizona State University, Severn has rattled off five consecutive wins, four of them finishes. The 52-year-old’s lengthy resume includes victories against former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin, fellow UFC hall of famer Ken Shamrock, Oleg Taktarov and David “Tank” Abbott. In 117 professional appearances, Severn has been knocked out only once.

Other winners at KOTC “Lockdown” included Garrett Davis (third-round anaconda choke submission against Ryan Chiappe), the unbeaten Brad Stewart (majority decision over Elmer Waterhen) and Mukai Maromo (second-round knockout against Carlos Espinoza).

Clementi Scores Submission

UFC veteran Rich Clementi coaxed a tapout from Lenny Nelson with a rear-naked choke in the Steel Fist Entertainment “Hostile Validation” headliner on Saturday at The Rave in Milwaukee. Nelson met his demise 3:32 into the first round.

Clementi, who took part in Season 4 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, has won four of his last five fights, all by submission. The 33-year-old Slidell, La., native was pruned from the UFC roster in wake of consecutive defeats to the world-ranked Gray Maynard and American Top Team’s Gleison Tibau. Clementi will make his Bellator Fighting Championships debut on Sept. 9.

Meanwhile, World Extreme Cagefighting castaway Sergio Gomez stopped David Cerinowski on first-round punches in just 68 seconds at “Hostile Validation,” as he won for the third time in four appearances. Gomez lost to Marcus Hicks and Rich Crunkilton inside the WEC.

Other winners at the event included Shine Fights veteran James Warfield (third-round rear-naked choke submission against Ryan Bixler) and EliteXC veteran JC Pennington (second-round triangle choke submission against Matt Wikoff).

Hawn Stops ‘Mr. International’

Undefeated welterweight prospect Rick Hawn bounced the well-traveled Shonie Carter on second-round strikes in the Triumph 3 “Havoc” main event on Saturday at the Hampshire Dome in Milford, N.H. The end came 4:08 into round two.

Perfect as a professional, Hawn has finished six of his first eight foes. A four-time national judo champion, the 33-year-old placed ninth in the discipline at the 2004 Olympics.

Carter had not been finished by strikes in more than five years. “Mr. International,’ who will be forever linked to his spinning backfist knockout against Matt Serra at UFC 31 in 2001, has fallen on hard times of late. The 38-year-old has lost five of his past six bouts.
