Round 2

Almeida once again brings the fight to the fence, looking for a takedown, but this time he absorbs some punches and elbows to the side of the head as he spends the better part of two minutes clinging to Boyington’s legs. More hard elbows from Boyington force Almeida into an extra gear on the takedown attempt, and he gets the striker back to the mat again. Boyington works his way back to his feet and circles out to meet Almeida in the center. Almeida lands a couple leg kicks but eats a few hard shots from Boyington in order to get inside and close the round with another takedown.

Boyington's striking won the judges over.
Almeida chases him down, changes levels and hits another takedown near the fence. Boyington is busy off his back, trying to land elbows and punches, but he’s having trouble as Almeida keeps tight on top with his head buried. With one minute left, Boyington gets back on his feet and connects with a few good punches, but Almeida soon has him back on the mat. Boyington tries a kimura from underneath, grimacing and trying to force the submission, but Almeida frees the arm just before time runs out.

Justin Torrey vs. Rex Harris

Round 1

Harris closes the distance on Torrey quickly, easily takes him to the mat and stacks him against the fence, but Torres slides him the fence and they jockey with over-unders in the clinch. Torrey gets a few subtle fence grabs in to stop Harris' takedowns, avoiding the eye of referee Bryan Miner, then trips Harris to the mat with a twisting foot sweep, landing awkwardly on top, essentially in position for a nearside armbar. Torrey leans back and looks for the armbar, but his legs can't control Harris, so “T-Rex” scrambles out on top and settles in Torrey's full guard, but Torrey uses the fence to stand again before any real offense lands. They stay in the clinch with Torrey banging the body until the bell.

Round 2

“T-Rex” finds another trip takedown from the clinch, turning him away from the fence. Torrey knows where's at in the cage, so he turns himself around and shrimps back to the fence, controlling Harris with butterfly hooks while he tries to kick him away. Torrey gets up enough to force Harris to roll forward and attack his leg, letting Torrey box his ears, but Harris clings onto his waist as they reach the feet, hanging onto the rear waistlock while Torrey tries to stomp his feet from in front. “The Warrior” tries to explode to turn and face Harris, but Harris just throws him back on the mat as he does so. Back on the mat with Harris on top, with less than two minutes to go. Torrey uses the butterfly hooks again to create space, but he's looking tired now and can't achieve separation as the time winds down with Harris grinding on top.

Round 3

Torrey catches Harris with a combination near the fence, a hard knee on the end of it, and then grabs the fence to defend against a Harris trip takedown. The middleweights separate, Harris snaps off a pair of punches and Torrey shoves him against the cage. An inside knee from Torrey catches Harris on the cup and referee Bryan Miner pauses the action. Harris takes a minute to recover down on one knee, then steps out to meet Torrey in the center. Torrey gets pushed against the cage but reverses, then continues to hold

Harris eked a win out over Torrey.
Harris in the clinch as Torrey’s corner screams for their fighter to disengage. Harris tries a double-leg, gets Torrey to a knee and turns the corner to try and take the back. Torrey spins out of it and catches Harris with an uppercut, a knee as they fight in close quarters. Harris answers with a good uppercut of his own and more clinch knees to the gut. With 1:40 on the clock, Harris powers into a takedown and spends the next minute clung to Torrey’s legs, keeping him glued to the ground. Harris doesn’t mount much offense down the stretch but does manage to control Torrey to the final bell.

Patrick Walsh vs. Tyler King

Round 1

Walsh lobs an overhand left and tries to get in on King’s legs, but the taller man shoves Walsh away. The next entrance from Walsh puts King on the fence, then on the ground just 30 seconds into the fight. Walsh stands with King still holding guard, tries to slam but can’t get the angle. King gets to his feet but is held against the fence by Walsh, who works King’s body with short punches. Another takedown lands Walsh in half guard on King’s right side. Walsh twice leans across to frame up a kimura but can’t find it. Walsh stands with 90 seconds left and allows King to do the same. An overhand left slaps King’s face before he’s shoved against the fence again. King tries to grab a guillotine as he’s taken down, but Walsh slips out and stands, leaving King on a knee. Walsh scores with more body shots as King gets back to his feet. King tries a takedown of his own in the last 30 seconds but can’t get it.

Round 2

A big left hand from Walsh appears to wobble King, who tries to grab hold of the smaller man. Walsh slips away to continue striking from range, now mixing in left hooks and uppercuts with his big bombs. King wants the Thai clinch but can’t keep hold of Walsh, who is moving in and out of range, engaging and disengaging from the clinch. Walsh’s boxing isn’t pretty, but it’s enough to outdo King, who doesn’t seem to have any sort of game plan here. Walsh gets in on King’s legs, spends 30 seconds working for a takedown and drags the big man to the mat. Ninety seconds left now and Walsh is getting a little busier with his ground-and-pound. King slowly works back to his feet, but once there, he just wobbles around the cage until he’s taken down by Walsh once more.

Round 3

Walsh needs all of 15 seconds to complete another takedown, planting King at the base of the fence with a double-leg. King puts him in guard, so Walsh backs up and allows him to stand. As soon as King gets back to his feet, Walsh drives him against the cage and back to the canvas.

Walsh wore out his King with his wrestling.
King puts him back in guard and doesn’t allow Walsh to get through with much offense, so Walsh lets him stand again. This time, King defends the takedown attempt and steps out to meet Walsh in the middle. Walsh takes him down there, defends an omoplata attempt and passes to side control on King’s right side with 90 seconds left. King reclaims guard, kicks him away and stands, then tries a sacrifice throw which allows Walsh to get back on top. Walsh is elbowing King’s ribs from side control with 45 seconds left, just riding out the remainder of the round to reach what should be a win on the judges’ scorecards.

Washington Nunes da Silva vs. Colton Smith

Round 1

Smith seems to be having some issues with the mat early on as the UFC vet repeatedly wipes his feet on the cage surface. He lands a few inside leg kicks on da Silva, but neither man is letting his hands fly so far, now halfway through the opening round. Da Silva counters an inside leg kick with a left hook, then backs out of the way of Smith’s next kick. Smith runs the Brazilian against the fence, where da Silva uses the Thai clinch to hit Smith’s body with a hard pair of knees. Da Silva changes levels and runs Smith to the ground, but Smith is back on his feet within moments. Now it’s Smith working clinch knees, corralling da Silva against the cage and slamming him to the ground with a waistlock. Smith passes to full mount, drops a few punches and then attaches himself to da Silva’s back as time runs out.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Smith

Round 2

Smith is quicker to bring da Silva to the ground in the second, flooring the Brazilian and passing straight to side control on the right. The onetime “TUF” finalist leans across da Silva’s body, looking for a mounted crucifix or maybe a kimura on the other side. As he works on the ground, Smith sits up and motions to referee Bryan Miner that he was poked in the right eye. Miner calls in the doctor, who clears Smith and allows the fight to resume. As soon as it does, Smith is passing to full mount, keeping heavy pressure on da Silva as they continue to grapple. Smith finishes the round with a bit of heavy ground-and-pound.

Round 3

Da Silva starts the final round in the center of the cage, looking exhausted as he waits for an opportunity to land a strike. Smith isn’t being a stationary target, instead moving around da Silva and peppering with kicks to the legs and body. Referee Miner calls for action after nearly 90 seconds of slow action, but the pace doesn’t really pick up. Da Silva backs up to the fence, allowing Smith to take the outside position in the clinch and land a few knees. Da Silva comes away from the exchange complaining of an eye poke, and again the doc is called in to consult.

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Smith dominated da Silva and had time to
pose for the cameras while doing so.
Da Silva is quickly cleared to continue and the fight resumes with 2:30 on the clock. Da Silva catches a kick from Smith and tries to run him to the ground, but Smith keeps his balance on one leg and wraps his arms around da Silva’s upper body. Da Silva loses the leg, allowing Smith to turn the corner and jump on the Brazilian’s back. Smith has one hook in, but his left leg is blocked by the cage. Smith drops a few punches, tries a rear-naked choke, then goes back to socking da Silva’s face. Smith starts clowning in the final 15 seconds, sticking out his tongue and motioning to the crowd as he rides out the final seconds on da Silva’s back.

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

'Capitao' easily won the battle of Almeidas.
Saul Almeida tries to use long punches to control the range against the smaller man, Marcos Alexandre Campos de Almeida, who we’ll call “Capitao” in this play-by-play to avoid confusion. Capitao is landing some hard leg kicks as he chases Almeida aroundt he cage. Capitao changes levels for a shot, sprawled on by Almeida, but Capitao jumps back up and spins around to take Almeida’s back and ride him to the ground. Capitao immediately slaps on a rear-naked choke, adjusts and gets the tap from Almeida. The win gives Marcos “Capitao” Almeida the right to face featherweight champ Lance Palmer at WSOF 26 in December.

The Official Result

Marcos Alexandre Campos de Almeida def. Saul Almeida via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R1 1:23

Rick Glenn vs. Adam Ward

Round 1

Ward lifts and slams Glenn to the ground with a takedown just 30 seconds into the opening round. Glenn takes a minute trying to hold Ward in his guard before rolling through and escaping to his feet. The featherweights spend a minute feeling out the range on the feet before locking up again and clinching on the fence. Glenn takes the outside, lifts Ward and deposits him on the mat, but Ward springs right back to his feet and fends off a short-lived rear-naked choke attempt. Ward gets back on the offensive, grabbing for a takedown which forces Glenn to hop away.

Glenn blasted out Ward from guard.
The former WSOF champ Glenn applies pressure early in round two, forcing Ward against the fence to deliver knees to the body. Ward turns him around, grabs for a high-crotch single but gets reversed again by Ward. The featherweights continue to fight in close quarters until 70 seconds into the round, when Glenn changes levels and hits another takedown. Glenn stands over Ward in his full guard, then comes back down with a big left hand. Ward is clearly stung from the punch, then Glenn delivers another pair of left hands to knock him out cold. Referee Bryan Miner finally recognizes that Ward is finished and stops the fight.

The Official Result

Rick Glenn def. Adam Ward via KO (Punches) R2 1:27

WSOF 125-Pound Title Fight:
Magomed Bibulatov vs. Donavon Frelow

Round 1

Frelow opens with a hard kick to the body of Bibulatov, who’s staking out the center of the cage early, moving Frelow around the edge. More circling and feinting from the flyweights in the first 90 seconds, both men trying leg kicks but not fully unloading. Felow lands a hard left hook to the body as he rushes forward on Bibulatov, but the American is sidestepped and hurled to the ground near the fence. Bibulatov tries to mount as he drops punches, but Frelow sits up with his back to the cage and escapes to his feet. Back to the middle they go with 2:00 to fight in the opening round, and now Bibulatov slips to the mat. He bounces back to his feet and catches Frelow charging at him again, and the Chechen uses the momentum to score another takedown. Frelow is back on his feet 30 seconds later, still picking at Bibulatov with scattered low kicks. Bibulatov is checking the kicks now, but he easily avoids a late Frelow takedown attempt and finishes the round with a nice flurry of punches.

Round 2

Frelow gets right back to leg-kicking at the start of round two, while Bibulatov swings and misses with some impressive spinning kicks. Bibulatov hits another slam takedown, this time in the middle of the cage, but again Frelow jumps back to his feet. The Chechen keeps hold of Frelow and puts him on the fence to deliver knees to the body. Frelow tries to reverse but gets spun back around and kneed one more time before Bibulatov releases. Three minutes left in the frame as Bibulatov continues to try spinning attacks and Frelow continues to dodge them. Bibulatov’s best moments are coming in the clinch and with takedowns, though Frelow isn’t giving him much to fear on the feet, low kicks aside. Frelow steps into the pocket, lands a knee to the body and takes an uppercut in return. Having taken a break from the leg kicks, Frelow turns them up again with one minute to go and puts a few hard shots on Bibulatov’s planted left leg. Bibulatov is still controlling the action, still walking forward on Frelow and threatening with lightning-fast kicks.

Round 3

Bibulatov puts a leaping kick in Frelow’s midsection, then sidesteps and lands a glancing hook to knock the charging American to the floor. It looks like the fal was mostly a slip, as Frelow jumps back up looking no worse for wear. Frelow presses forward now, but he overcommits to an overhand right and gets taken down near the fence again. He tries to stand and gets sucked right back to the ground as Bibulatov picks the ankle. The next get-up attempt is succesful, and the flyweights are back on their feet with 2:20 left in round three. An uppercut and a high kick back up Frelow, who has once again stopped attacking Bibulatov’s lead leg. Instead, it’s Bibulatov taking big chops at Frelow’s leg as they circle in the last minute of the period. Inside the last 20 seconds, Bibulatov takes a kick to the groin and needs a moment to regain his composure. When action resumes, Bibulatov runs Frelow to the ground with a huge slam takedown to end the round.

Round 4

Frelow comes out swinging and rushes Bibulatov against the cage, where the “Gladiator” dumps Frelow to the ground with a trip. The 125ers get back up and return to the center of the cage. Bibulatov kicks at Frelow’s lead leg until Frelow charges at him with a jump knee that backs up the Chechen to the fence. There, Bibulatov grabs hold of Frelow and hurls him to the mat, then tries to jump on his back. Frelow blocks the back-take but winds up trapped against the cage; Bibulatov releases and leaps into the air to deliver a spinning kick to Frelow’s breadbasket. After being released, Frelow tries to run Bibulatov to the other side of the cage; it works about as well as the first time, with Bibulatov throwing Frelow down to the ground again. Frelow sits up against the fence and tries to work a front headlock into a guillotine, but Bibulatov is unconcerned and frees his head after a moment’s struggle. Frelow continues to try the guillotine even as Bibulatov passes to full mount. Once there, Frelow releases Bibulatov’s head and scoots backward to escape to his feet. They’re down to the final minute of round four, Bibulatov still controlling the center of the cage, keeping Frelow at bay with jabs, side kicks and spinning attacks.

Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Bibulatov

Round 5

Bibulatov gets backed up to the fence by the charging Frelow and, same as before, drops levels to plant the Wand Fight Team member on the floor with a double-leg takedown. Frelow grabs for another headlock from underneath, but he’s in danger of surrendering an arm-triangle choke or worse as Bibulatov works from half guard. Frelow rolls to his knees, allowing Bibulatov to jump on his back. Bibulatov peels off to try an armbar, loses it, and now it’s Frelow on top with 3:30 on the clock. Bibulatov closes his guard around the American and wraps up tight as Frelow tries to mount some offense. They stall out for a few moments, long enough for referee Dan Miragliotta to bring the flyweights back to their feet with under three minutes remaining.

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Bibulatov's striking arsenal was too deep.
Frelow knows he needs a finish and is headhunting, while Bibulatov tries handstand kicks and more spinning assaults to keep Frelow on the outside. Frelow tries to get inside on a double-leg and is stuffed. Bibulatov catches him with a grazing kick to the face, then Frelow strikes back with a nice right hook, one of his best shots of the fight. Bibulatov shoots and deposits Frelow on the ground with 50 seconds remaining, and that may seal the deal. Frelow rolls to his knees, absorbing right hands as he struggles back to his feet. Bibulatov keeps him trapped against the cage and delivers a few big knees right before time expires.

Vinny Magalhaes vs. Matt Hamill

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Magalhaes recovered and tapped Hamill quickly.
Magalhaes goes straight for the clinch, grabs for Hamill’s legs and gets stuffed on the early takedown try. Hamill catches a kick under his arm but eats a right hook from Magalhaes and lets go of the leg. An uppercut seems to sting Magalhaes, who drops to the ground but doesn’t seem too badly hurt, just trying to draw Hamill down to the canvas. The plan works to perfection: seconds later, Magalhaes tries an armbar, gets shaken off and then attacks the standing Hamill’s legs. Magalhaes is deep on a kneebar but Hamill is preventing him from stretching out the leg.

Once he breaks Hamill’s grip, Magalhaes extends the kneebar fully and forces the tap.

The Official Result

Vinny Magalhaes def. Matt Hamill via Submission (Kneebar) R1 1:08

Nick Newell vs. Tom Marcellino

Round 1

The lightweights trade leg kicks as Marcellino pushes forward in the opening minute, trying to catch Newell off-balance and push him to the ground. Newell resists the takedown attempt, puts Marcellino’s back against the fence and changes levels for a double-leg. Marcellino tries to get a guillotine working as he’s taken down but can’t, and he winds up with Newell on top, wrapping up his legs. Newell passes to side control on Marcellino’s left and “Tommy Gunnz” tries another headlock. Newell finally frees his head with 2:00 on the clock and immediately attacks Marcellino with a guillotine of his own as he passes to full mount. Marcellino escapes the guillotine, so Newell switches to an armbar. Newell tries to go belly-down and extend Marcellino’s right arm but loses his grip underneath and allows Marcellino to escape with 45 seconds left. Newell shoots on the fence again and Marcellino gives him a few elbows to the back while fending off the takedown.

Round 2

Marcellino begins the round with leg kicks but is soon backed up by Newell, who executes another takedown near the fence. Marcellino grabs the headlock again, but it’s not very tight this time and Newell slips his head free quicker than before. Newell is working methodically to pass Marcellino’s guard, now 90 seconds into the round. Marcellino grabs the headlock again and tries to sweep, but Newell wrangles him and puts him back on the bottom, then shoves him against the cage. As Marcellino gets to one knee, Newell jumps on his back and rides him back down to the ground. Marcellino tries to roll over and take top position, but Newell sees the move coming and transitions into Marcellino’s open guard. Newell wraps up Marcellino’s legs to keep him on the ground with 1:45 left in the middle frame. Marcellino keeps trying the guillotine but isn’t coming any closer to finishing. Newell passes to the left of Marcellino, who is seated against the fence, unable to stand. Just when it looks like Marcellino might regain his footing, Newell yanks the legs out from under him. The lightweights are stood up with 20 seconds to go; Marcellino catches a kick and trips Newell to the ground just as the round expires.

Marcellino begins round three as he finished round two, by catching a kick and using it to trip Newell to the ground. On his knees, Newell buries his head and scoots toward the fence while Marcellino tries to jump on his back. Newell works back up to his feet after a minute, Marcellino’s arms around his waist, holding him against the cage. Marcellino scores with a knee that gets the doubled-over Newell’s attention. Newell goes upright, reverses the clinch on the fence and drops levels for a single-leg takedown.

Newell's grappling earned him two rounds.
Newell is clinging to Marcellino’s left leg with all his might while Marcellino attacks with elbows and punches. Marcellino grabs his best-looking guillotine of the fight, but Newell gives a thumbs up behind his back to referee Miragliotta shortly before slipping his head free. The action stalls and Miragliotta wants the fighters back on their feet with just over one minute to go. Newell tries to duck under a Marcellino punch but instead gets shoved to the ground, with Marcellino landing in his guard. Marcellino is desperate for the finish with 20 seconds to go, trying to punch out Newell on the ground, but he runs out of time.

Blagoy Ivanov vs. Derrick Mehmen

Round 1

Mehmen uses long jabs to try and keep the southpaw champ on the outside, but Ivanov takes less than a minute to connect with a cracking overhand left. Mehmen covers up as he tries to escape along the fence, and his evasive tactics buy him enough time to recover as Ivanov chases him down with more punches. Mehmen lands a right hook to the body, then goes upstairs with the same hand. Ivanov closes in on Mehmen to tag him with another lead left hand, and again “The Caveman” has to circle out to his left. Ivanov’s hands are very low, but he’s doing well to slide backward when Mehmen throws hands. Ivanov clocks Mehmen with a right hand, runs him against the fence with more punches and clinches up. Ivanov is warned by referee Bryan Minor for grabbing the fence as Mehmen reverses the clinch. Ivanov breaks out of the clinch with an uppercut that misses by an inch. Mehmen’s face is a mess just three minutes into the fight, blood spurting from his nose as his head is snapped back by more Ivanov punches. Mehmen is trying to reclaim some ground with combinations but Ivanov has the drop on him with counters. Both men are clowning now, dropping their hands and inviting the other to strike, but the final 30 seconds tick down without a big exchange.

Round 2

Mehmen looks to be fully recovered from any first-round damage as he pushes the pace on Ivanov early in round two. The American has the speed edge and is starting to use it with combinations, though Ivanov is still landing the heavier punches. Ivanov continues to plod forward, hands low, seemingly trying to trap Mehmen near the fence but never cutting off the angle to keep him there. Down to the last two minutes of the round, Ivanov is starting to crack Mehmen with hard, straight lefts down the center, worsening the bleeding on the American’s face.

Ivanov punched Mehmen out in round two.
Mehmen keeps circling the outside but eventually gets caught near a cage post. Ivanov flashes a jab and then swings a huge left hook into Mehmen’s face. Mehmen comes away from the exchange clutching his left eye, kneels on the ground near the fence, and Ivanov moves to pound him out. Referee Minor sees the fight is over and waves it off, as Mehmen has suffered some kind of eye or facial injury from Ivanov’s big left hand. Blagoy Ivanov retains his WSOF heavyweight title with a second-round technical knockout.

The Official Result

Blagoy Ivanov def. Derrick Mehmen via TKO (Punches) R2 4:33

Jon Fitch vs. Yushin Okami

Round 1

Fitch opens with a kick to southpaw Okami’s lead leg and then circles left while Okami takes the center of the cage. Both men spend the opening minute pawing with jabs but neither finds the upper hand. Sixty seconds in, Fitch shoots and pushes Okami to the fence, where the Japanese fighter turns Fitch around in the clinch. Fitch reverses again, trying to pull Okami away from the fence on one leg. Okami keeps his balance and spins Fitch again, this time driving a knee into the American’s body on the way. The welterweights continue to trade places midway through the opening round until they’re separated by referee Dan Miragliotta. This time it’s Okami shooting for a takedown and Fitch backing up to the fence. Okami tries to work the Thai clinch, then switches to an outside trip, but neither is successful. The fighters keep spinning along the fence, first with Okami on the outside, then Fitch, then repeating again. Okami goes hard for a single-leg in the last 20 seconds but Fitch stays upright to the bell.

Round 2

Fitch knocks Okami backwards a few steps with a straight right hand, then shoots in and puts “Thunder” on the mat at the base of the fence. Fitch triangles Okami’s legs but can’t pin the larger man down, and Okami is back on his feet before one minute has expired. Okami pops Fitch with a left hook, shoots for a takedown and gets sprawled on. Fitch counters with a shot of his own and puts Okami on his seat against the cage again. Fitch passes to the side, gift-wraps Okami’s arm behind his back and uses it to flatten out the former middleweight. Okami regains half guard but takes some grinding elbows and punches to the face as Fitch does his thing. Okami tries to wall-walk and flip Fitch onto his back, but Fitch stays heavy and keeps top position. Okami gets to a knee, scoots over to the fence but is held on the ground by Fitch with a front headlock. Fitch tries to take Okami’s back but Okami nearly escapes out the back door to take the top. Fitch holds on to end the round in the dominant position.

Round 3

Okami moves Fitch toward the fence for a clinch, then tries to sprawl as Fitch changes levels for a takedown attempt. Fitch bowls him over and retakes top position with nearly 4:30 remaining in the round. Okami scoots away from the fence and uses butterfly guard to stand. The bigger man backs up Fitch to the fence again, and once more Fitch is able to overpower Okami with a takedown. Okami works to post and get back up, but Fitch is tenacious and keeping plenty of pressure on top.

Fitch won the final 10 minutes.
Okami clambers back to his feet with 2:00 to go, but he’s back on the mat 15 seconds later, now with Fitch on his back with one hook in. Okami explodes out of the precarious position and stands over Fitch, who grabs hold of another single-leg and takes Okami straight back down. With one minute left, Okami goes all out on a last-ditch guillotine attempt, but Fitch’s head slips right out. Okami kicks Fitch away, but as Okami scrambles up, Fitch catches him kneeling and flattens him out again. Fitch grinds away with body shots and short punches to the head until time runs out.
