WEC 51 Nets 3,791 Spectators

The attendance numbers for WEC 51 were officially released Tuesday by the Colorado Office of Boxing.

The event drew a total of 3,791 spectators for a live gate of $191,620. Of the 3,791 total in attendance, 1,511 were let in for free, meaning that 2,280 paid for their tickets. This means that nearly 40 percent of the audience received compensated tickets. The numbers were confirmed today by Sherdog with office director Ophelia Duran.

The organization's first show in Colorado, WEC 51 was held at the 1rstBank Center in Broomfield, Colo. on Sept. 30. The event was headlined by a featherweight title fight between reigning champion Jose Aldo and challenger Manny Gamburyan. Aldo smashed his competition, earning a second-round knockout victory and defending his title for the second time.

Also on the card was the long-awaited rematch between former lightweight king Jamie Varner and nemesis Donald Cerrone. The pair previously met in 2009, when Cerrone hit the champion with an unintentional illegal knee in the fifth round of their championship contest. With Varner unable to continue, the fight was sent to the judges, and Varner walked away with a contentious split decision victory. At WEC 51, there was no controversy, as Cerrone was in control from the get-go, using his improved wrestling to stifle Varner and earn a three-round unanimous decision.
