However, it wasn’t just any average day, as Cormier received a hero’s welcome upon walking in the doors at the Fox Sports studio. The newly crowned UFC heavyweight champ was showered with cheers, applause and confetti, and former NFL star Tony Gonzalez and personalities Curt Menefee, Colin Cowherd and Jason Whitlock were among those in attendance to greet “DC.”

Cormier captured heavyweight gold with a knockout of Stipe Miocic 4:33 into the opening round of their headlining about at UFC 226 on July 7. The American Kickboxing Academy product received a similar reception from his colleagues after vanquishing Anthony Johnson to claiming the vacant light heavyweight strap at UFC 187 in May 2015.

The 39-year-old Cormier hopes to defend his light heavyweight crown this year before setting up a blockbuster showdown with Brock Lesnar for the heavyweight strap in early 2019. “DC” has said that he plans to retire in March 2019 regardless of how the remainder of his fighting career plays out.
