UFC on Fuel 2 ‘Gustafsson vs. Silva’ Results and Play-by-Play

Jason Young vs. Eric Wisely

Round 1
Young throws first with a low kick inside; Wisely replies with one to the body, then has a high kick blocked. Wisely tries to tie up behind a left hand but gets shucked off. Young connects with a left hook as the featherweights continue to twitch, feint and hop around. Wisely whiffs on a spinning kick and has his back taken on the feet. Young tries to throw him to the ground, but Wisely finds his balance leaning into the fence. Young punishes his man with some hard knees to the back of his thighs. Referee Robert Sundel inexplicably breaks the fighters up despite the clearly advantageous position for Young. The Brit catches a leg kick and plows Wisely to the ground, then begins working from the American’s closed guard. Wisely pushes off the fence with his feet to get some space. Young stands up and throws some chopping leg kicks to his prone opponent while dodging upkicks. Wisely stands and gets off a couple body kicks before being tripped to the floor again. Young finishes the round with some stiff elbows from top position.

Round 2
Young looks to snipe over the top of leg kicks from Wisely, who moves around the outside, switching between orthodox and southpaw stance. Young gets another trip takedown along the fence and Wisely quickly closes up his guard, limiting Young’s ground-and-pound. Young stands up and stays out of range from upkicks, then chooses his moment to dive back into Wisely’s guard with a big right hand. Wisely is keeping active off his back with short punches to Young’s head, while Young sporadically rattles off some rib-roasters. Young stands again and ref Sundel orders Wisely up this time with about 70 seconds left in the round. Young times a leg kick from Wisely and kicks the American’s other leg out from under him. Wisely grabs for an arm and Young stands up to finish the round.

Round 3
Wisely comes out with a big push kick and tries to take the back of Young standing. Young keeps his balance as Wisely attempts to tip him to the ground, and they’re soon back to trading on the feet. “Little Lee” is showing some fire after presumably losing the first two rounds, but the action slows 90 seconds in and Young trips him to the ground on the back of another caught kick. Young postures up and smashes Wisely with some hammer fists, then stands over his man, once again dodging upkicks. Young picks his time to crash through Wisely’s guard with a punch, but ref Sundel only lets him stay there a few moments before issuing a stand-up order. Young just misses with a turning back kick and Wisely answers with a hard left hook. Wisely slips on a high kick in the middle of the cage and Young finishes the fight on top.

Official result: The judges score the bout 30-28, 29-28 and 29-28, all for the winner by unanimous decision, Jason Young.

Simeon Thoresen vs. Besam Yousef

Round 1
Both welterweights line up in the orthodox stance as Yousef stalks Thoresen from the center of the cage. Thoresen looks to clinch up and gets punished with uppercuts and knees in the clinch. Yousef is finding his range with punches now, and he snuffs out a Thoresen single-leg shot. Thoresen pops his man with a single jab and then ducks under a hook to grab another single-leg. Yousef fires off a dozen quick punches before he’s pulled to the ground, then some elbows from his back once Thoresen gets him down. Yousef closes up his guard and keeps smashing Thoresen with hard shots from his back while Thoresen offers up some body blows from the top. Referee Marc Goddard wants them up with 80 seconds to go, and Thoresen comes straight forward. Yousef greets him with a big knee, then punches to the body when the taller Thoresen grabs a Thai plum. Thoresen sends some knees up the middle, but Yousef’s body punches seem to be landing harder. They’re boxing hard and dirty inside, exchanging some big punches in the clinch just before the horn.

Round 2
Yousef lands the first significant offense of the round 30 seconds in when he cracks the oncoming Thoresen with a hard left hook. Thoresen shoots a double and gets sprawled all over, then is forced to get on his bike as Yousef charges him. Yousef’s legs buckle after a sneaky, short hook from Thoresen connects and “The Grin” goes for a brabo choke. He can’t get the tap and instead steps into mount, where Yousef gives up his back. Thoresen dribbles Yousef’s head off the mat with punches until he sees the opening for a rear-naked choke, then whips his left arm across Yousef’s throat. Yousef is forced to tap almost immediately at 2:36 of the second round.

Reza Madadi vs. Yoislandy Izquierdo

Round 1
Madadi is quickly inside, looking for a double-leg takedown. He gets backed away on the first attempt, but the second try sees him dragging Izquierdo to the canvas and landing in side control. Madadi is taking his time to set up position, looping an arm around Izquierdo’s head and leaning toward north-south position. He tries a choke but gets too high, and Izquierdo scrambles to his feet, blasting Madadi with a right hand that has “Mad Dog” turning his back and jogging away. Izquierdo chases him down with a knee and more punches, but can’t capitalize. Madadi regains his composure and waits out some more strikes from Izquierdo before shooting in again. Izquierdo denies him this time and they jockey for position on the fence. Madadi trips Izquierdo down along the fence, but they pop right back up. Madadi is still working for another takedown on the fence when referee Marko Gyllenland breaks them up with just under two minutes remaining. Izquierdo rushes Madadi with high kicks and side kicks, then wheels away before the smaller Madadi can retaliate. Izquierdo tags Madadi with a hook and bombs away as Madadi covers up on the fence. Madadi hits a double-leg, Izquierdo stands and Madadi tries to slap on a guillotine just as the round expires.

Round 2
Izquierdo wastes no time in throwing a punching combination, then resumes firing off every manner of kick while Madadi stands just outside range. Izquierdo rushes Madadi against the cage, but Madadi uses his opponent’s momentum against him and plows him down with a double-leg. Madadi is in the same position as early on, looking to set up a choke from side control. Izquierdo gets to his knees and drives forward, leaving his neck wide open for a guillotine choke. Madadi sits back to wrench the choke, then rolls straight into full mount and forces the tap. The submission comes officially at 1:28 of the second round.

Francis Carmont vs. Magnus Cedenblad

Round 1
Cedenblad moves around the outside while Carmont pushes in from the center, soon shooting for a single-leg. Carmont gets the takedown, nearly getting guillotined in the process, but he pops his head loose and sets up in Cedenblad’s open guard. Cedenblad is active on the bottom, looking to frame up a kimura or armbar, but Carmont sees it coming and stands up. Cedenblad explodes forward and drags Carmont to the ground, with Carmont drawing a warning from ref Kristian Hacklou for grabbing the fence to defend. Cedenblad moves into full mount and Carmont gives up his back, allowing “Jycken” to sink in both hooks. Carmont is on his knees, just absorbing punches from the Swede. Cedenblad goes for a rear-naked choke, can’t find it and bails back to the former position. Now, Cedenblad rolls to his back, still looking for the RNC. The choke isn’t fully sunk and Carmont gives the ref a thumbs-up before using arm control to sweep back into top position. Carmont smashes with some heavy shots in Cedenblad’s guard with 45 seconds left. He tries to extract his left leg to mount, but Cedenblad is doing well to keep the Frenchman in check. Carmont finally gets to mount with seconds to go, but Cedenblad gets out the backdoor just before the horn.

Round 2
Carmont hits a takedown almost instantly and thumps Cedenblad with punches as the Swede turtles on his knees. Cedenblad nearly gets back to his feet, but instead is dragged down and mounted again. Carmont is racking up some heavy shots as he locks up a body triangle. Now it’s full mount again as Cedenblad rolls over, and Carmont is just teeing off -- left, right, left, right -- as ref Hacklou hovers nearby. Cedenblad leaves his neck exposed and Carmont whips on a rear-naked choke with his left arm to get the tap at 1:42 of round two.

Cyrille Diabate vs. Tom DeBlass

Round 1
DeBlass quickly closes the gap on the rangy Diabate and grabs onto a single-leg against the fence. He spins “The Snake” to the ground and Diabate sets up a butterfly half-guard. DeBlass works to pass to side control on Diabate’s right side, but he’s stalled out with his right leg trapped between the Frenchman’s legs. DeBlass spends the middle part of the round just trying to free his leg; with 90 seconds left, he sits up and drops some elbows on Diabate’s head. Diabate tries to power to his feet and DeBlass finally extracts his limb, moving to side control on Diabate’s left with just under a minute remaining in the round. The American can’t do much damage from top position but stays there until the end of the round.

Round 2
DeBlass charges Diabate again and brings him to the ground straight away with another takedown. DeBlass passes to side control much more quickly this time and drops some elbows on Diabate’s face. Diabate tries to scramble up DeBlass snares him in a guillotine. The choke keeps Diabate on the ground and allows DeBlass to maintain his spot in side control on the French fighter’s right side. Diabate grabs a single-leg and stands up to push DeBlass into the fence, the finishes the takedown and works from DeBlass’ open guard. DeBlass is breathing with his mouth wide open on the ground as Diabate looks to set up shop in side control. DeBlass drops back for a leg lock, can’t get it and instead pushes forward to put Diabate on his back and regain side control. Diabate gets up and dumps DeBlass to the ground with a slow-motion single. The rangy Diabate sits up outside of DeBlass’ open guard and still is able to put power behind his punches and elbows. DeBlass is bleeding from his nose and looking spent as he returns to his corner.

Round 3
Diabate is keeping DeBlass on the end of his punches, not allowing a takedown to begin the final frame as he did in the other two. He feints with knees and drives one into DeBlass’ midsection when the American steps into range. DeBlass shoots sloppily, allowing Diabate to turn and take top position. DeBlass goes for a leg lock, but there’s nothing there and an unconcerned Diabate bides his time before plunking his man with stiff punches and elbows. DeBlass looks stuck, unable to muster the energy to get out from beneath Diabate as the fight enters its final two minutes. Diabate keeps picking his shots, and they’re hard ones. DeBlass drops back, framing up a heel hook. He stands up and Diabate does nothing, allowing DeBlass to take top position. Now Diabate sweeps out from beneath with a minute to go and socks DeBlass with a stiff left, then some short elbows to the head and body.

Official result: One judge scores the bout a 28-28 draw, while the remaining two score it 29-28 for the winner by majority decision, Cyrille Diabate.

Papy Abedi vs. James Head

Round 1
Head opens with a body kick and some crisp punching combinations, zapping Abedi with a left before the welterweights clinch up and work on the fence. Abedi gets the outside position and finishes with a high single-leg, going down to Head’s closed guard. Head tries to throw some offense from his back while Abedi stays tight on top, working to pass to side control on Head’s right side. Head regains closed guard and scoots backward into the fence, then posts and escapes to his feet when Abedi passes to half-guard. Back standing, Abedi slugs Head with a big right hook; Head lunges forward with straight rights, finding the mark a few times and considering a guillotine when he catches Abedi leaning. Abedi is dazed against the cage and Head loads up on nasty elbows and right hands. Abedi goes down and Head steps into full mount, then takes his back. Head sinks in both hooks and tries a rear-naked choke, but it’s not there at first. After a quick adjustment, Head gets his right arm under the chin of Abedi and coaxes the tap at 4:33 of round one.

Brad Pickett vs. Damacio Page

Round 1
Page comes out swinging a murderous overhand right and Pickett fires back, catching Page off-balance and taking top position in the middle of the cage. Page grazes a standing Pickett with an upkick before latching onto an armbar. Pickett lifts Page up and drops him, then walks away to allow “The Angel of Death” back to his feet. Page rips Pickett with a right hand, a pair of knees up the middle and a double-leg takedown. It’s side-control for Page on Pickett’s right side, but only for a brief moment, as the Englishman scrambles to his feet and slams Page down on his back. Pickett blasts Page with some hard right hands from half-guard, but Page stays calm and regains closed guard midway through the round. Pickett stacks up Page and drops some short elbows while both men take a quick breather from the frenetic pace. Page tries to sit up and gets shoved back down with a forearm on his face. He grabs for a leg lock, causing Pickett to stand and Page to follow. Page takes the outsider, mixing kicks in with his power punches, but getting sloppy with a flying knee which allows Pickett to score another takedown. Page uses the fence to work back up, but not before Pickett cracks him with a hard right uppercut. Pickett hits another takedown just before the horn to finish on top.

Round 2
Pickett gets inside and drops the bloody-nosed Page to the ground with a slam, but Page sweeps as soon as they hit the ground and stands back up. A corking left hand from Pickett sends Page to his posterior, and Pickett swarms, trying to polish Page off with ground-and-pound. Page is on his knees, his left side to the fence with his arm pinned down, and Pickett is just unloading with hard right hands. “One-Punch” goes to the front and loops his right arm around Page’s neck for a guillotine attempt, but it proves a bad move as Page winds up in top position. Pickett abandons the choke and pushes forward, pinning Page against the fence as both men stand up. Pickett staggers Page with a lead uppercut, follows with a left hook. Page is on his knees and Pickett pounces, taking his back and sinking in both hooks. The Englishman slips in a rear-naked choke and bears down, and Page is forced to capitulate. Pickett picks up the submission win at 4:05 of the second round.

DaMarques Johnson vs. John Maguire

Round 1
Johnson opens up with chopping leg kicks to the inside of the lead leg on the southpaw Maguire. The Englishman rushes forward after a minute and drives Johnson to the canvas, setting up shop in the closed guard of “Darkness.” Johnson considers a guillotine, gives it up and throws some elbows from his back. Now he throws up a triangle, switches to an omoplata, then a leg lock. Maguire denies all of Johnson’s chained submission attempts and regains his position on top. Maguire moves to half-guard but stalls out as Johnson is latched onto his far side wrist. Now, Maguire gets the arm loose and moves to side control with a minute remaining in the round. He drops a couple hammer fists before Johnson scrambles to his knees. Maguire tries a guillotine, causing Johnson to roll over and allowing Maguire to take his back for the final 20 seconds of the frame.

Round 2
Maguire clips Johnson with a wild overhand left as he comes inside for a takedown. He gets it, but soon is reversed by Johnson, who sets up shop in Maguire’s closed guard and grinds away with short punches and tight body control. Johnson scoots Maguire toward the cage, stopping a few feet away from the perimeter to drop an elbow. Maguire swings his legs up for a triangle or armbar, but Johnson denies it and moves to side control. Maguire pushes his hips away and gets enough space to stand up, where he goes back to moving along the perimeter. Johnson chops away with some hard leg kicks, each one producing visible signs of pain on Maguire’s face. They tie up and Maguire puts his hand on the canvas to avoid knees. Johnson drags the fight to the floor but it’s Maguire who gets on top and works from Johnson’s open guard with 90 seconds to go. Johnson is staying busy with elbows from his back, then framing up a kimura, while Maguire throws a couple punches to the body. Johnson tries to flip Maguire over and get enough leverage to finish the kimura, but he can’t find it. From Johnson’s right side, Maguire steps over the head and straightens out Johnson’s left arm for a textbook armbar. Johnson has nowhere to go and taps immediately at 4:40 of round two.

Dennis Siver vs. Diego Nunes

Round 1
It’s an early kicking battle with Nunes going low and Siver snapping his right leg high to graze the Brazilian’s face. They finally engage after 90 seconds and Siver winds up on top briefly after a tumble, breaking off with a hard shot. They resume striking and Siver puts a kick in Nunes’ breadbasket; Nunes replies with a nice right hand up top. Nunes moves forward to stick a straight punch and gets caught with a left high kick. Again, Nunes rushes forward, only to be countered by the tighter punches of Siver. Nunes lands a solid left hook and Siver replies with a one-two to the body and head. Nunes grabs the Thai plum and drives a couple knees into Siver’s body before the end of the round.

Round 2
The featherweights resume kicking to start the second round, and it’s Nunes getting the slight edge on leg strikes through the first minute. Siver ducks under a spinning backfist for a wasitlock and drags Nunes down, but can’t keep him there. Nunes puts a front kick in Siver’s face and steps out of the way of a combination. Now it’s a turning kick to the body from Nunes and this time Siver’s counter-shots land. Nunes catches a kick in the cup but he’s quickly ready to resume. Siver ducks a spinning strike again and tries another takedown, can’t get it. Siver snaps back Nune’s head with a front kick. They tie up and Siver breaks off with a cracking left hook.

Round 3
Siver is swinging for the fences, going wild with punches whenever Nunes wades into his range or tries to clinch up. Nunes rocks Siver with a hook, but Siver recovers and goes back to his kick-heavy attack. Nunes gets the Thai plum and connects with a few knees, though they’re mostly blocked by Siver’s forearm. Two minutes left in the bout and the round still seems very much up for grabs. The fighters clinch, Nunes trying more knees while Siver throws no-look punches, neither man scoring with much. Siver is trickling blood from the corner of his left eye; as the bout goes down to its final minute, it’s coating the left side of his face. Siver pushes Nunes into the fence with an underhook and rips into the Brazilian’s body with right hands. Nunes gets caught off-balance under fire from Siver and goes to his rear at the base of the fence, then hops back up to deliver a spinning kick to Siver’s midsection.

Official result: All three judges score the bout 29-28 for the winner by unanimous decision, Dennis Siver.

Paulo Thiago vs. Siyar Bahadurzada

Round 1
The welterweights stand a fair distance apart, feeling one another out. When Thiago decides to charge forward, he does so with his head down, throwing a wild, overhand punch. Bahadurzada counters perfectly: a left hook clips Thiago behind the ear, but a short right hand does the real damage, turning the Brazilian’s head around and knocking him out instantly. Thiago hits the ground face-first, out cold. It’s a stunning, 42-second knockout win for Siyar Bahadurzada in his UFC debut.

Brian Stann vs. Alessio Sakara

Round 1
Stann hops around on the outside while Sakara stands stock-still a few feet away, both in the orthodox stance. Sakara ducks low when Stann comes forward winging punches but still takes some big shots. Stann connects with a hard knee, slips momentarily, but pops back up and connects with another. Sakara looks to be in trouble as Stann follows him to the ground, swarming with punches. Two minutes down in the round now and Sakara has regained his wits. He’s throwing punches off his back as he holds Stann in his closed guard. Stann breaks the guard and postures up, holding Sakara’s head with his right hand and socking him on the jaw with thunderous lefts. Sakara’s eyes roll back; he comes to his senses a split-second later, but it’s too late. Referee Marc Goddard steps in to save Sakara from further punishment.

Alexander Gustafsson vs. Thiago Silva

Round 1
Silva rushes to Gustafsson’s side of the fence and start throwing hands straight away. Gustafsson quickly creates some space and both men look to find their range. A sneaky right uppercut sends Silva crashing to his side. Gustafsson attacks with hammerfists, but Silva scrambles up. Gustafsson walks him down, gives him an uppercut on the body. Gustafsson throws a quick leg kick outside, pops a straight right hand, another low kick, another right. Silva presses in and slugs Gustafsson with a right hand in a combo, but Gustafsson returns fire with a three-piece. Silva is sporting a cut under his eye as he tries to walk down Gustafsson, who is moving fluidly along the outside. He stops and reverses direction a few times as he hits Silva with outside leg kicks. Silva spins Gustafsson around with a leg kick of his own. Gustafsson paws with his jab and send through a straight right, goes high and grazes with a head kick. They finish the round feinting and Gustafsson gives Silva little bow at the horn.

Round 2
Gustafsson wastes little time in tossing Silva to the ground, but he doesn’t do much from the position, choosing to stand over Silva until ref Leon Roberts orders him up. Gustafsson is finding success with hooks and keeping Silva at a good range with his front kicks. He misses another trip but soon digs into Silva’s body with a pair of uppercuts. Silva scores with a right cross that has Gustafsson moving backward. The Brazilian walks him into the fence and swings a wild combination, but Gustafsson dips out of trouble. Silva paws at his own right eye a few times as they reset. Gustafsson is throwing quick, hooking combos, but Silva is covering up to absorb most of the punishment. The kicks from Gustafsson are getting through, however, landing to the body and face, and keeping Silva at bay. Silva pushes forward in the last few seconds, tacking on a few punches. Gustafsson finishes with another front kick.

Round 3
Silva is sporting a good sized mouse in the middle of his forehead and damage under his right eye as the final round begins. Gustafsson feints and cuts angles in the center, mixing in kicks as Silva looks for an opening from the outside. They wade into range, punching in the pocket, and it’s Silva who scores hardest with a left. Gustafsson responds with a solid uppercut and punishes Silva’s body further with a front kick and a knee. Following a Gustafsson combo, Silva motions toward his eye, perhaps indicating a poke, but the action continues. Gustafsson is still looking fresh and snapping off quick punches as the fight enters its final 90 seconds. Silva is still coming forward but not letting his hands go as Gustafsson pours on the punches, kicks and a few knees in the clinch. Silva gives it a final push, trying to hunt Gustafsson down with power punches, but it’s too late and the Stockholm crowd roars at the horn in anticipation of a Gustafsson win.
