UFC on Fox 18 Bonuses: Rothwell, Johnson, Rivera, Alcantara Garner $50K
Ben Rothwell became the first person to submit Josh Barnett in mixed martial arts competition, and that milestone earned Rothwell an extra $50,000.
Rothwell garnered “Performance of the Night” honors by tapping “The Warmaster” with a modified guillotine choke 3:48 into the second stanza of their co-main event clash at UFC on Fox 18 on Saturday night. Barnett placed himself in peril by diving for a single-leg near the fence, allowing Rothwell to catch his opponent with a 10-finger guillotine. Once they hit the canvas, the IFL veteran applied a little more squeeze and Barnett had no choice but to tap.
Meanwhile, Anthony Johnson routed Ryan Bader in the evening’s headliner to capture the card’s other $50,000 performance bonus. The Blackzilians representative sprawled on a takedown, defended a kimura and eventually moved back mount, where he blasted the Power MMA Team representative with punches to earn a stoppage 1:26 into round one.
Finally, Jimmie Rivera and Iuri Alcantara earned $50,000 apiece and “Fight of the Night” for their featured bantamweight scrap. Rivera got the best of the closely-contested affair, landing fluid combinations to the head and body while surviving a pair of flash knockdowns to earn a unanimous decision triumph.
