Zak Cummings vs. Dominique Steele

Round 1

Cummings clips Steele with a left hook in the pocket, then follows the newcomer to the other side of the cage and floors him with a straight left hand down the center. A dazed Steele powers back to his feet and tries to get away, but Cummings cracks him with a left cross and a flurry of hooks, forcing referee Otto Torriero to stop the bout.

The Official Result

Zak Cummings def. Dominique Steele via TKO (Punches) R1 0:43

Jessamyn Duke vs. Elizabeth Phillips

Round 1

Phillips lowers her head and steps into the pocket windmilling punches; a few of them catch Duke on the jaw and draw a smile from the taller fighter. Duke eats a couple more punches as Phillips continues to wade in and out of range. Duke tries to grab the Thai clinch but can’t get hold and keeps pressing forward. Phillips tries a body-lock takedown, but it’s stuffed by Duke, who nearly lands in mount before opting to try an armbar. Phillips stacks her up, frees the arm and winds up in Duke’s open guard with just under three minutes to go in the round. Duke tries to sweep, can’t roll Phillips and instead closes her guard. Phillips passes the guard, then steps into mount and starts dropping punches, causing Duke to roll over and give up her back. As Duke gets to her knees, Phillips sinks in both hooks, wraps her right arm around Duke’s neck and pulls her backward to the ground. Duke defends the choke and rolls over into Phillips’ guard to ride out the final 15 seconds of the round.

Sherdog Scores

Mike Fridley scores the round 10-9 Phillips
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Phillips
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Phillips

Round 2

Duke emerges for round two with a sizable cut beneath her right eye and some damage above the left, too. She walks forward on Phillips, sticking a few jabs and absorbing now-slower punches of her opponent. Phillips charges in to clinch and try for a takedown, but this time Duke snares her in a guillotine on the way down. When they hit the mat, Phillips passes to side control and puts Duke in danger of a shoulder choke, forcing her to release the guillotine. Two minutes into the round, it’s Phillips in Duke’s half guard, landing short left hands and grinding Duke’s head into the mat with elbows and forearms. Phillips leans across the body to frame up a kimura, then abandons it in favor of full mount. Duke bucks her out of mount and briefly takes top position, only to be swept back underneath a few seconds later. Again, Duke sweeps, but Phillips catches her in a guillotine in the transition and then releases to try and scramble up. Duke tries a heel hook in the waning seconds of the round, but there’s nothing there.

Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Phillips
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Phillips

Round 3

Once again, Duke walks forward on Phillips, who is throwing tired punches as the third round begins. Phillips manages to catch a kick and tries to trip Duke to the ground, but Duke reverses to take top position. Duke tries a topside guillotine, but she’s in position for a brabo choke. Duke switches to the brabo but fails to secure Phillips’ arm, so Phillips is able to roll to her knees and then escape to her feet. Duke walks after her and puts a straight right on the face of Phillips, whose hands are now by her waist. Phillips manages to tag Duke with a few overhand shots, but there’s not much behind them. Duke wraps up Phillips near the fence and trips her to the ground with just about one minute remaining. From half guard, Duke gift-wraps the right arm of Phillips and lands a couple punches. She gives up punching to try a rear-naked choke in the final 20 seconds, then gives that up in favor of an armbar but runs out of time.

Andrew Holbrook vs. Ramsey Nijem

Round 1

Holbrook takes the center of the cage, misses with a huge uppercut and takes a pair of left hands on the cheek in quick succession. The UFC newcomer tries to clinch with Nijem and, after a brief struggle, pushes him against the fence to land knees to the body. The lightweights trade positions on the cage, Holbrook lands another knee to the gut and then Nijem breaks away. Nijem circles the perimeter with his back to the fence, shoots for a single-leg and floors Holbrook, who throws up his legs for a triangle. Nijem shucks the legs and passes to side control, but Holbrook gets a knee inside and creates enough space to work back to his feet. The 155ers continue to work in the clinch on the fence, where Nijem stings Holbrook with an elbow to the side of the head and follows up with a pair of clinch knees. Nijem ducks under a windmill overhand left and takes down Holbrook again with under one minute remaining. He socks Holbrook with a couple hard punches on the ground and dodges another triangle to finish the round on top.

Sherdog Scores

Mike Fridley scores the round 10-9 Nijem
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Nijem
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Nijem

Round 2

Nijem wastes no time charging at Holbrook with a combination of heavy punches, putting the unbeaten fighter on roller skates near the fence. Rather than standing back to continue unloading on Holbrook, Nijem clinches up, drops levels and hits another takedown. Holbrook fishes for a guillotine, but Nijem is already in half guard and is in no danger. Holbrook drops back to try a heel hook; Nijem extends his leg, slips the heel loose and drives forward to shove Holbrook to his back. Holbrook sits up, sweeps, catches Nijem in a tight D’arce and tries to finish, but Nijem gets his hips to the ground and turns out of the choke. As they scramble up, Holbrook grabs for a guillotine, but this attempt doesn’t come close. Still, Holbrook manages to keep Nijem on his knees as he grabs for another guillotine. This time, Nijem drives forward and hits a final takedown to ride out the final seconds of the round on top.

Sherdog Scores

Round 3

Nijem backs up Holbrook with a high kick, then rushes in behind it with a combination and clips Holbrook with a sweeping left hand. Thirty seconds in, Nijem hits a takedown and moves straight to back control, then fends off a straight armbar. Holbrook grabs for a kneebar and extends the right leg fully, but Nijem gets his other foot inside to break up the submission attempt. Holbrook switches to a heel hook, but there’s nothing there and Nijem jumps on the back of the Chris Lytle pupil again. Nijem only has one hook in, allowing Holbrook to roll halfway over and land a couple good elbows to Nijem’s face. Holbrook gets to his knees, trying to stand, and eats some hard right hands under the armpit. Holbrook keeps trying for the straight armbar or kimura while Nijem works to secure his back. Nijem finally gives up the back and passes to side control in the final 10 seconds, and that’s where it ends.

Cruickshank catches a high kick on the shoulder and uses it to dump Krause to the mat, then backs up to allow him to stand. A few seconds later, Cruickshank repeats the sequence and again lets Krause get back to his feet. A low ankle pick puts Krause on the ground again, but this time he scrambles up and clinches to trip Cruickshank to the canvas. Krause jumps straight onto Cruickshank’s back, sinks in a rear-naked choke and forces a quick tap for the win.

The Official Result

James Krause def. Daron Cruickshank via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R1 1:27

Bryan Caraway vs. Eddie Wineland

Round 1

Caraway sticks out a hand to touch gloves, but Wineland wants none of it. Caraway grabs the first kick from Wineland and hustles him to the ground near the fence, where Wineland sits up and then stands. Caraway keeps hold of an underhook and presses Wineland against the cage, while the former WEC titleholder tries to get some separation. Referee Yves Lavigne calls for work, then warns Caraway when Wineland complains of “Kid Lightning” holding his gloves. The bantamweights separate about 90 seconds into the round; Wineland immediately begins feinting and firing off big punches, but Caraway slides out of range. A looping overhand left from Caraway lands behind Wineland’s ear but doesn’t seem to have any effect. Wineland is moving much better than Caraway through the first three minutes of the bout, though he’s yet to land any of his power strikes. Caraway shoots a double, pushes Wineland to the fence and lands a knee to the body. Wineland sprawls out and threatens with a guillotine to escape the clinch. Caraway keeps whiffing on the overhand left, but he’s dodging Wineland’s punches, too. A right cross from Caraway grazes Wineland’s chin, and he scores with a knee to the gut in a clinch initiated by his opponent. Wineland finishes the round with a right hand and a knee.

The overhand right from Caraway connects, then an inside leg kick appears to catch Wineland on the cup, but Wineland touches gloves and wants to fight on. A left hook from Caraway opens up a small cut on the cheek of Wineland, who paws at the blood leaking beneath his eye. Caraway counters a Wineland jab with a right hand over the top, then Wineland comes back with a stiffer jab that snaps back Caraway’s head. Wineland sprawls on a shot, sticks another jab and slides out of range to dodge a reaching right hand. Wineland stuffs another shot from Caraway, who comes back with a few clinch uppercuts. A clean jab from Wineland draws a nod and some raised-arm taunting from Caraway at the end of the round.

Sherdog Scores

Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Caraway
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Caraway

Caraway jabs back, stays out of range of Wineland’s counter punches and then hits him with a left hook as Wineland lobs a long right hand at his body. Wineland sprawls on a shot but again eats a couple uppercuts in the clinch before Caraway disengages. Caraway whiffs on a body kick, slips to the ground but jumps back to his feet without any punishment. Wineland lands one to the body, gets clipped with a high kick to the face as he backs away. With 80 seconds left, Caraway shoots for a takedown on the fence, gets stood up and reversed. Wineland lands a body shot but gets caught leaning over and hit with another Caraway uppercut. Kenny Robertson vs. Ben Saunders

Round 1

Rangy southpaw Saunders sets up the center but is soon backed up to the fence by Robertson, who drops down for a single-leg. Saunders jumps guard, then pulls rubber guard as Robertson comes down to work from guard. Switching from rubber guard to omoplata, Saunders tries to convert to a submission but winds up using the omoplata to escape to his feet. Saunders begins putting some solid kicks on the body of Robertson, then sends a few off the arms. Robertson ducks low and sends an overhand right to Saunders’ jaw, then backs “Killa B” up to the fence and lands the right again. Saunders escapes danger momentarily by tagging Robertson with a left hand, then another body kick. Robertson grimaces as another kick lands on his right arm. Saunders shuts down a takedown attempt inside the final minute and walks Robertson toward the fence, but Robertson sends him crashing to the mat with an overhand right to the temple. Robertson rides out the final 15 seconds of the round in Saunders’ guard.

Round 2

Saunders goes back to his body kicks at the start of the second frame, but Robertson seems unintimidated, marching into the pocket to catch the taller man with more overhand punches. Saunders slows his progress with a body kick and a jab before Robertson steps inside to land a nice level elbow. An inside leg kick lands square on Robertson’s cup, and the local fighter takes a few moments to recover as the Chicago crowd boos Saunders for the inadvertant foul. They get back to business and Robertson takes a kick to the body in order to land an overhand left. He backs up Saunders to the fence, where another punch opens a cut right between the Floridian’s eyes. Robertson is just standing in the pocket now, dodging Saunders’ jabs and firing back with leg kicks and right hands. Saunders scores with a hard body kick as the round enters its final 90 seconds. Robertson takes another kick on the arm in order to wrap up Saunders with a body lock on the fence, but it only lasts a few seconds. Inside the final minute, Robertson gets busy with punches, missing many but catching Saunders with clean shots here and there. Robertson doubles over the closing moments to try a single-leg and takes a couple elbows to the side of the head.

Robertson grabs for a leg but comes away with nothing, then whiffs on a spinning back fist. Robertson changes levels and drives Saunders to the ground, where “Killa B” immediately pulls rubber guard. Saunders throws up a triangle, catching Robertson with both arms in, and slices him up with elbows. Robertson covers up the top of his head, so Saunders tries to loop punches around to the side. Robertson’s blood is leaking all over Saunders as he remains caught in the triangle midway through the round. Saunders switches to open-palm strikes to the side of Robertson’s head, then goes back to the elbows, but they’re bouncing off Robertson’s gloves. Thirty seconds into the fight, Miller works from Castillo’s half guard, going heavy as Castillo tries to use an elevator sweep. Miller passes to full mount, looks like he’ll go for an armbar, then gets heavy again and secures the position with knees on the ground. Castillo tries to bump and escape, nearly gets caught in a triangle as he rolls to his knees, then slips out of a reverse triangle and rushes forward to take top position. Miller puts him in closed guard, then creeps his legs up Castillo’s body with two minutes left in the round. Miller goes back to closed guard and hits Castillo with an elbow to the face along the way. Miller spins and grabs for a heel hook, forcing Castillo to bail, and now the lightweights are back on their feet with one minute to go. Miller is keeping the pressure on, forcing Castillo to the outside, and now he defends as the Team Alpha Male product grabs for a double-leg. Down to the final minute of the round, Miller continues to press forward on Castillo with leg kicks. Castillo scrambles back to his feet, gets caught in a headlock and takes a few knees from Miller before being released. Miller whiffs on a high kick, lands a hard one to the inside of Castillo’s lead leg. Castillo shoots again and is stuffed by Miller, pushed the New Jerseyan to the fence but has to disengage when Miller grabs for his neck. Lawlor tries to close the gap with straight lefts and right hooks but pulls up short. Lawlor sticks the lead right hook, then lands it again and follows up with a straight left that makes Villante back off. The 205ers meet in the middle of the Octagon, where Villante chops at the inside of Lawlor’s lead leg with kicks. Midway through the opening round, neither man has taken a clear advantage. Villante lands the inside leg kick again, covers up as Lawlor bombs him with an overhand left and sneaks an uppercut underneath. Lawlor takes a knee to try and grab Villante’s leg, but the New Yorker pulls the limb back. Takanori Gomi vs. Joe Lauzon

Round 1

Gomi fires off a straight right to the body and a left hand upstairs, backing up Lauzon toward the fence. A pair of hooks to the body connect for Gomi, then another speedy combination up top. Lauzon answers with a pair of punches as he steps back to the middle of the cage. Lauzon grabs a single-leg and runs Gomi to the ground, then jumps on his back. Gomi nearly escapes, twisting over to try and put his back on the mat, but Lauzon hooks a leg and controls him to reestablish back control. Lauzon flattens out Gomi and begins peppering the belly-down Japanese veteran with punches. The left hands start coming hard and heavy, and Gomi stops moving after a few punches land flush to the temple. Lauzon stands up and walks away before referee Herb Dean stops the fight. A confused Gomi sits up a few seconds later and Dean officially waves off the bout; it’s a bizarre finish, but Joe Lauzon gets the stoppage victory.

A lightning-fast pair of switch kicks to the body score for Barboza, but he’s bearing some redness on his right eye from a Felder left hand. Felder misses with a spinning kick, lands one to Barboza’s leg. Barboza’s right eye is swelling rapidly, and now the Brazilian moves to his left side, away from Felder’s left hook. Barboza continues to tack on the leg kicks, but after two or three more, Felder begins to check them. A spinning back fist from Barboza wraps around Felder’s head, drawing a grin from the Philadelphian. Barboza’s next attack, a spinning back kick, lands to Felder’s cup. Tate eats a few jabs as she tries to work her way inside, then a right hook from Eye clears “Cupcake” out of the pocket. The early punches have reddened Tate’s nose and forehead just 90 seconds into the fight, but she continues to step forward. Eye rushes forward throwing punches and gets clipped by Tate’s counter right hand. An inside leg kick lands for Eye, then she gets drilled on the chin by another Tate right straight. An overhand right from Tate sends Eye staggering backward, but when Tate pounces on the ground, Eye catches her head in a reverse triangle. Tate gives the thumbs up, and a few seconds later, she slips her head free. It’s north-south position for Tate with under two minutes to go in the round. Eye spins to put her back in half guard, so Tate leans left to right across Eye’s body to drill the body with hard elbows. Tate loops her right arm around Eye’s head and works for a topside one-armed guillotine choke, but Eye saves herself by controlling Tate’s left wrist.
