For the third week in a row, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will put on a card airing on ESPN, but it lost multiple fights during its dramatic weigh-ins.
UFC on ESPN 28 is headlined by a bout between middleweight
mainstays Uriah Hall
and Sean
Strickland and both main eventers made weight. A middleweight
with tremendous knockout potential, Hall (17-9) is always a
wildcard when he enters the Octagon. "Primetime" is on the best
streak of his career having put together four straight wins inside
the UFC. In his last time out, Chris
Weidman suffered a gruesome leg injury from the first kick at
the beginning of their bout. Prior to that, Hall knocked out
Anderson
Silva, won a decision over Antonio
Carlos Jr. and decimated Bevon Lewis
with a perfectly placed uppercut. Hall stepped on the scale at
185.5 pounds.
Also on a four-fight win streak is Strickland (23-3), and he remains unbeaten as a middleweight in his career. The 30-year-old most recently picked up a TKO win over Brendan Allen at a scheduled catchweight, and won a decision over Krzysztof Jotko. "Tarzan" will look to dive further into contention with a win here, and he officially weighed 185 pounds for his first UFC main event.
Although Hall and Strickland had no problem making weight, the same could not be said for others on the card. Nicco Montano (143) continued to struggle to hit her proper marks, missing weight by seven pounds, which resulted in her bantamweight bout against Yanan Wu (135.5) getting scrapped. Also off is a bantamweight tilt between Trevin Jones (135) and Ronnie Lawrence after Lawrence did not appear at the weigh-ins and was pulled for medical issues. Finally, Philip Rowe (173.5) came in 2.5 pounds above the welterweight limit for his bout against Orion Cosce (170.5), and this match will continue with a 20 percent fine for Rowe going to Cosce.
UFC on ESPN 28 will air in its entirety on both ESPN+ and ESPN. The prelims should begin around 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT, while the main card starts at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
