Ultimate Fighting Championship newcomer Rafael Alves cried before stepping on the scales, but the tears he shed didn't make enough of a difference as he still came in 11.5 pounds over the featherweight limit.

It appears that the UFC Fight Night 185 weigh-ins might wind up being more drama-filled than the actual fights. The weigh-ins for the latest UFC card saw four fighters fail to make weight. While the headlining heavyweight bout between Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis is intact, the fight card drops down to 14 after the weigh-ins took place.

The fighter with the dishonorable distinction of missing weight by more than an entire weight class was Alves, who came in at 157.5 pounds for his featherweight bout against Pat Sabatini. Other misses were mild by comparison as Ketlen Vieira weighed in two pounds above the bantamweight limit, Jared Gordon missed featherweight by four pounds and Drako Rodriguez hit the scales 4.5 pounds over the bantamweight limit. While Vieira was fined 20 percent of her purse and Gordon and Rodriguez each receiving 30 percent fines as well, Alves vs. Sabatini has been removed from the card, per the promoter.

Save for two bouts against Francis Ngannou, Blaydes (14-2, 1 NC) has largely looked unstoppable inside the Octagon. An impressive six-fight unbeaten streak was snapped by his Cameroonian rival, but “Razor” has bounced back to go on an emphatic four-fight win streak. The current stretch has seen him finish both Shamil Abdurakhimov and Junior dos Santos with strikes, while also picking up decisions over Alexander Volkov and Justin Willis. The Illinois native will look to keep his title hopes alive this weekend and officially weighed 259 pounds.

Also riding an impressive win streak is “The Black Beast.” After earning decisions over Blagoy Ivanov and Ilir Latifi, Lewis (24-7, 1 NC) went back to delivering incredible knockouts, doing so recently against Alexey Oleynik. Since 2018, Lewis’ only defeats have come against former champions in the form of Daniel Cormier and dos Santos. The proud Texan stepped on the scales at 263 pounds.

UFC Fight Night 185 will stream entirely on ESPN+. The prelims begin at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT, while the main card is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
