Derek
Brunson’s sixth knockout victory in the UFC might have been his
most memorable.
Brunson earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his
stoppage of former light heavyweight champion and middleweight
title challenger Lyoto
Machida in the
UFC Fight Night 119 main event in Sao Paulo on Saturday night.
A counter left hand from Brunson put Machida on skates, and the
North Carolina native landed a series of follow-up hammerfists on
the mat to seal the victory at the 2:30 mark of the period.
Elsewhere, Pedro
Munhoz received the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the
Night” check for his first-round submission of Rob Font in a
featured bantamweight matchup. A left hook from Munhoz rocked Font
late in round one to set the stage for the finish. From there,
Munhoz sprawled on a takedown, locked in a one-arm guillotine and
rolled to mount to earn the tapout 4:03 into the stanza.
Finally, Elizeu
Zaleski dos Santos and Max Griffin
collected “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their
preliminary welterweight scrap. While Griffin was able to land a
pair of knockdowns in the fight, it was dos Santos who captured a
unanimous decision thanks to strong efforts in the first and third
rounds.
