UFC Brasilia to be Held in Empty Arena Following Governor’s Order, Media Day Cancelled

The global pandemic that is the coronavirus has now forced the Ultimate Fighting Championship to make a tough decision.

On Wednesday, Combate reported that the Las Vegas-based organization would be at risk of cancelling the event altogether, or invoked the possibility of shuttering the UFC Fight Night 170 event to fans. On Thursday morning, Combate then wrote that the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium had agreed to hold this event without any in attendance. The event will go down in Brasilia, Brazil, on March 14.

MMA Fighting reported on Wednesday night that the governor of Brasilia, Ibaneis Rocha, announced that all large gatherings would be shut down until March 16. This included schools, concerts and sporting events, and affected UFC Brasilia as well. In addition, the promotion has opted not to host Media Day in anticipation of the event, to protect the athletes as well as the media members covering them from potential exposure to the coronavirus.

The UFC has yet to comment on the status of its events, beyond confirmation that media day would indeed not be held. The statement, as recorded by MMA Fighting, writes, “Due to consideration of the governement’s decree yesterday, Ultimate Media Day has been cancelled. Content featuring the athletes scheduled to fight in Saturday’s event will be captured and shared with credentialed media members in advance of the event.” Otherwise, UFC President Dana White famously stated on Sunday that he “didn’t give a s--- about the coronavirus.”

UFC Brasilia is set to go down on March 14 at the now-empty Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasilia, Brazil. The card will be headlined by a lightweight thriller between Kevin Lee and Charles Oliveira. Serving in the co-main event should be a grappler’s delight as Demian Maia faces off against Gilbert Burns.
