Terence Crawford staked his claim as arguably the best in the sport of boxing Saturday inside Madison Square Garden in New York as he defended his WBO welterweight title against Egidijus Kavaliauskas in tremendous fashion.

Crawford (36-0, 27 KOs) started slowly and appeared to be knocked down in the third when “Mean Machine” landed a clean right to the head in the third. It was ruled a slip, and unfortunately for Kavaliauskas, that was the last time he had the upper hand in the contest. From that point forward, it was all “Bud” and he made it look easy.

Crawford turned up the heat in Round 4 and dropped the challenger with a barrage of punches in the seventh frame. Two stanzas later, the Omaha native floored Kavaliauskas (21-1-1, 17 KOs) with a sharp combo to the head and then clobbered the Lithuanian moments later with a devastating right hook to the jaw. Kavaliauskas was finished from that punch and the fight was officially over just 44 seconds into Round 9.

In the ESPN-televised co-main event, Richard Commey was aiming to retain his IBF lightweight crown against unbeaten Teofimo Lopez. However, young Lopez was too much for the Ghanaian to handle as he was crushed inside of two rounds.

After a relatively slow opening frame, Lopez (15-0, 12 KOs) dropped the champ with a sizzling straight right to the jaw. Commey (29-3, 26 KOs) struggled back to his feet and once the fight resumed, “El Brooklyn” swarmed him with a vicious volley of punches, forcing the referee to intervene. The end came officially at 1:13 of Round 2, allowing Lopez to snatch up the IBF title; a unification bout with WBO/WBC/WBA champ Vasily Lomachenko now looms in the shadows. Advertisement
