Team Alpha Male Coach Details Backstage Scuffle Between Nate Diaz, Jason Guida at UFC 199

On the same night that his rematch with Conor McGregor was officially announced, Nate Diaz got into an altercation backstage with Clay Guida’s brother.

Emotions were running high after Guida suffered a third-round knockout loss to Brian Ortega in a preliminary featherweight bout at UFC 199 at the Forum in Los Angeles last weekend. Team Alpha Male coach Justin Buchholz, who was cornering Clay Guida that night, noticed that Jason Guida was extremely upset shortly after the bout’s conclusion.

“I turn around and one of the UFC stools, they have like four stools back there, was just shattered in like six pieces,” Buchholz said on the Stud Show Radio Podcast. “So Jason just grabbed it and ripped it to shreds or he slammed it, I don’t know. His brother just got f---ing stopped, so he was just flying off the handle, like emotional.”

Things escalated as the group exited the Octagon-side area and returned backstage. According to Buchholz, Diaz emerged from a bathroom just as he, the Guida brothers and the rest of the Team Alpha Male fighters were headed to the back.

"Clay said something to him, but Clay was discombobulated at that time," Buchholz said. "He just said something to Nate. He was all like, 'Man, I'm gonna f--k you up again' or something like that."

Guida and Diaz squared off at UFC 94 in January 2009, with “The Carpenter” taking a split decision over the Stockton, Calif. native. Buchholz said that Diaz was initially just confused by the comment until Jason Guida decided to interject himself into the situation.

"Then f---ing Jason and Nate got into it," Buchholz said. "I don't know what happened, but Jason bull rushes Nate and tries to put him up against the wall. Nate has got him in a clinch. Like 50 people from the UFC come rushing into this thing. I'm standing in the middle like, 'No!'

“Clay is grabbing Jason and a bunch of people are grabbing Nate, and they’re like trying to f--king kill each other for a good 30 seconds, 40 seconds.”

Buccholz recalls handing Diaz his shirt before the Cesar Gracie protege exited the area and returned to his seat in the arena.

Shortly thereafter, the promotion confirmed that Diaz and McGregor would square off again at UFC 202 on Aug. 20. Diaz defeated the Irishman via second-round submission in their first meeting at UFC 196. Jason Guida, meanwhile, is a veteran of 49 professional fights with appearances in Bellator MMA, World Extreme Cagefighting, and KSW, among others, but has not competed in more than two years.

“We’re not trying to f---ing fight,” Buchholz said. “I’m not sure what the hell happened.”
