Revitalized Jose Aldo Wants Next Fight to Be in Brazilian Soccer Stadium

Jose Aldo was all smiles after vanquishing Renato Carneiro – and Father Time -- Saturday night in front of thousands of his rabid fans.

Aldo looked like vintage “Scarface” in the co-featured bout of UFC Fight Night 144 in Fortaleza, Brazil, where he torched “Moicano” with a barrage of powerful punches to the head and body. The former WEC and multiple-time UFC featherweight champion looked like his old self in stopping his counterpart 44 seconds into round two. Aldo said he knew the fight was over once he connected with the first punch of that fateful salvo.

“He’s got great reach and good size,” he said at the post-fight press conference. “I think the division is renewing itself with great guys. He’s got good jabs and he kicks well in the legs. I knew that the first hand of mine that landed he would feel it.”

There was a bit of an outcry in the aftermath of the stoppage, which came just 44 ticks into the second frame, that referee Jerin Valel had intervened too early. “Scarface” disagreed.

“He was hurt,” he stated. “The ref told him to react and he didn’t, so they stopped the fight. The ref has the final say and of that’s what he thought, I agree with him.”

Many an MMA expert believed that Aldo, one of the greatest fighters to ever emerge from Brazil, was past his prime. The former 145-pound king had lost two in a row and three of four overall before stopping Jeremy Stephens last July, but the whispers were loud that his best days were long gone.

“A lot of the media said that it was Moicano’s time to beat me,” he scoffed. “But guys like me and Anderson Silva, at any moment we can turn the game to a high level. I wanted to get back to my trainers and teammates and see where I was at, if I was still at a high level and they agreed with me. That’s what I wanted to hear so I went back to the gym and trained hard and I proved that tonight.”

While Aldo most certainly would love to get another crack at regaining his lost world title, he said he wanted to see how things unfold first and not rush into anything. While he didn’t specifically call out any particular fighters, Aldo does know what he wants for his next outing.

“I want to fight here in Brazil again,” he said. “They're saying that the UFC returns to Curitiba this year. It is very good to return to fight at home and win at home. It's always very special – the crowd is on our side, they shout our name. My first fight for the UFC was in a soccer stadium, it would be very special to fight in a stadium again.”
