New Jersey State Athletic Control Board Will Isolate Judges, Analyze Scoring at CFFC 52

MMA judging will be under the microscope at the Oct. 31 event from Cage Fury Fighting Championships.

At CFFC 52, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board will compare the cageside judges’ scores, which will still determine the official results, with the tallies of three judges who will be watching the broadcast of the fight in an “isolated room without audio commentary.”

According to the release, the experiment came about as a result of observations from the commission, feedback from judges, comments from media who worked as shadow judges at recent events and discussion with executives within the industry.

“This agency has been pleased with both the quality of judging and our judging roster in this state, but we recently have wondered about the effects of blocked views, limited angles, sight distance and to a small degree, crowd noise,” the NJSACB stated in a release.

“Technological advances and skilled camera technicians can now offer the viewing fan base a closer, clearer and more precise visual of the action at hand as compared to what the judge sees cage side. It is noteworthy that the promotional executives and event broadcasters sitting cage side frequently view a table monitor as much or more than they view the live action itself.”

The NJSACB and the promotion previously worked together to implement instant replay at CFFC 43 last November. Replay was used in the main event to review the referee’s decision to stop the bout after Lyman Good accidentally poked Jonavin Webb in the eye during their welterweight title clash. The poke was initially ruled an accidental foul and the bout a no contest. The NJSACB chose not to change the call after further video review.

CFFC 52 takes place at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, N.J., and is headlined by a lightweight title bout between Darrell Horcher and Stephen Regman. The card will also include a bantamweight championship showdown pitting Ricky Bandejas against Nick Pace.
