Middleweight Contender Jared Cannonier Targets Fall Return After Suffering Torn Pectoral

Jared Cannonier no longer has any hopes of remaining on the UFC 248 card.

The middleweight contender revealed that he recently suffered a torn pectoral and will undergo surgery to repair the injury. Cannonier was originally slated to face Robert Whittaker at the March 7 event, but Whittaker was forced to withdraw from the card due to person reasons.

“The Killa Gorilla” was then linked to a potential bout with replacement opponent Darren Till at UFC 248, but that contest will have to wait until Cannonier returns to full health. Cannonier is now targeting the fall for his next Octagon appearance.

“I’m happy you found some courage and finally decided to accept the fight. On Monday. But only two days after I tore my left pec completely,” Cannonier wrote in an Instagram post directed at Till. “When it happened on Saturday, [Feb. 7], I was in Houston to talk about how you wouldn’t accept the fight. Now had you said yes when they offered, instead of dodging the fight presumably, I would have been in [Phoenix] gettin ready to beat yo ass. I’m not blaming you but I kinda am.

“Anyway, I’m gettin surgery on Tuesday. If you’re still around in the [middleweight] division, I’ll hit you up in the fall.”

Cannonier is 3-0 since dropping from light heavyweight to 185 pounds. Most recently, the 35-year-old MMA Lab representative scored a second-round TKO of Jack Hermannson in the UFC Fight Night 160 headliner on Sept. 28.
