Kamaru Usman 'Doesn't Really Care' if Fans Preferred To See Covington vs. Woodley

Kamaru Usman understands the conflicting opinions swirling around his upcoming shot at the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight title, but he doesn’t give them much weight.

Usman was given the opportunity to challenge Tyron Woodley for the undisputed 170-pound title at UFC 235 on March 2 in Las Vegas. The decision to award “The Nigerian Nightmare” his shot upset a few fans who were hoping the outspoken Colby Covington would be chosen given the social media back-and-forth in which “Chaos” and the champ have been engaging.

In an interview with ESPN, Usman was asked about the criticism he’s received since the announcement was made that he’d be fighting Woodley instead of Covington:

“I don’t really care,” Usman said. “It’s not a matter of what I want or what they want. If I got it the way I wanted it, I would have been fighting for the title months ago. I would have been the champ by now. So it’s kind of how the cookie crumbled. This is the situation that we’re in, and you gotta run with it.”

Usman is adamant he’s done enough inside the Octagon to warrant a shot including nine straight victories with notable wins over Rafael dos Anjos and Demian Maia. The 31-year-old has also helped out the UFC by cutting weight as a potential backup for UFC 228’s main event between Tyron Woodley and Darren Till.

“One of the biggest things that I always said in my career is that I wanted to be that guy who was ready so that when that door opened up, I was prepared,” Usman said. “I’m not gonna be the guy who, when the opportunity presents itself, I’m not ready. I’ve always been ready. And now, the opportunity’s here, and I’m ready to be the new welterweight champion of the world.”

UFC 235 takes place March 2, 2019 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The loaded card is scheduled to be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Anthony Smith, with Woodley vs. Usman in the co-main event slot.
