Josh Emmett couldn’t have drawn up his fight against Mirsad Bektic at UFC Sacramento any better.
He initially thought it would be a hard three-round fight with the possibility of a late finish. Instead, the Sacramento native ended it in the first via TKO, and he was rewarded with a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus.
“It was a phenomenal night to be out there injury free and the way I beat such a tough prospect in Mirsad Bektic,” Emmett said to Sherdog.com. “I feel like I have missed out on several of them which I should have got. It is all going to work out in the end, and it is a little sweeter. Not only did I get a huge win in my home city, but I got a bonus. The crowd was insane, like you would have had to be there to feel the energy. The stadium was rocking.”
Emmett is on a two-fight winning streak and believes the victory sets him up to fight the top of the division. He escaped the fight with no injuries, so he can fight as soon as possible. Emmett is eyeing anyone ranked in the Top 3.
“I think it lines me up to the top. Before the fight, I wanted to focus on him because he is very good. I wasn’t overlooking him, but now with a big win it sets me up to fight someone in the Top 3 and gets me closer to the title shot,” he explained. “Not just beat him but put him away in the first round. Just show what I cam capable of. I’m excited about that.”
Following the fight, Emmett and his team went out for an after party where he said the first drink was on him. Most people thought no one would actually take him up on that offer, but says he wasn’t lying and gave a ton of people free drinks.
“Yeah, I wasn’t lying. I had a big after party and said come find me and I got you,” he concluded. “I had a bunch of bottles, like five or so bottles of vodka and tequila and pouring everyone drinks. A ton of people took me up on that offer so I was not just saying that.”
