A top-five Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight pairing will join the promotion’s September pay-per-view offering.
According to ESPN Deportes on Thursday, UFC 266 will be gaining a high-stakes flyweight matchup as Jessica Andrade (21-9) takes on Cynthia Calvillo (9-2-1) on Sept. 4. The event does not currently have a location set, although it will likely be held in an arena in the U.S. Both women had lobbied for this meeting since Andrade’s last appearance.
The aforementioned last time out for Andrade went poorly, as she vied Valentina Shevchenko’s flyweight throne and was rebuffed in emphatic fashion. The former 115-pound queen was pounded out from elbows, and thereby suffering her third defeat in her last four fights. Andrade, a former bantamweight and then strawweight, moved to 125 pounds in late 2020 to knock out Katlyn Chookagian and earn a crack at the belt. “Bate Estaca” posts a career finish rate of 71 percent, with eight victories via knockout, seven by submission and six on the scorecards.
Like Andrade, Calvillo relocated to flyweight in 2020, where she captured a decision over former title challenger Jessica Eye. A subsequent effort against Chookagian saw the Tiger Muay Thai product drop a close decision. Calvillo made her promotional debut in 2017, where she became the first fighter in many years to compete on back-to-back pay-per-view main cards at UFCs 209 and 210, and she won both bouts by rear-naked choke.
UFC 266 will go down on Sept. 4, and there is no destination currently set. The headliner will see Jan Blachowicz defend his light heavyweight strap against Glover Teixeira. Other matches currently booked on the event include a lightweight battle between Uros Medic and Jalin Turner, as well as a flyweight clash pitting Erin Blanchfield against Sarah Alpar.
