Jason Wilnis had been stuck in a rut in his kickboxing career but on Friday night he turned things around in sensational fashion in the Glory 63 SuperFight Series featured bout.
Wilnis (32-9-1, 10 KOs) had dropped three consecutive bouts inside the Glory ring after winning and then defending the promotion’s middleweight crown. A TKO loss to Yousri Belgaroui between two split decision losses to rival Simon Marcus sent “Psycho” into a tailspin and he needed a win badly. Enter young upstart Jacob Rodriguez and two-plus rounds of action, and Wilnis is now back on track.
Rodriguez (3-3) fought well early as he attacked his Dutch counterpart often. Wilnis was patient, per the norm, but he seemed a bit uncomfortable as he figured out Rodriguez’s timing. Once “Psycho” figured his foe out, it was pretty much over. Wilnis began countering the younger fighter’s attacks with jabs and hooks but his bread and butter in the contest was his battery of leg kicks. Wilnis poured on a steady onslaught of leg kicks late in the second and continued the assault in third until Rodriguez could withstand them no more. Rodriguez bowed out just 15 seconds into the third.
In other Glory 63 preliminary action inside the Arena Theatre in Houston, Texas, Matt Baker took out Ryot Waller by TKO (punches) at 1:57 of the second; Bailey Sugden toppled Quade Taranaki by unanimous decision; Bekah Irwin defeated Stephanie Skinner by unanimous nod; Abraham Vidales stopped Dimitre Ivy by TKO at 2:34 of the second; Joe Taylor eked past Ivan Galaz via split decision; Demoreo Dennis knocked out James Chapman at 1:35 of the second by punches; Kou Lee edged Sovankesa Som by unanimous decision; Peter Stanonik snuck past Keemaan Diop via split decision; Sean Choice narrowly defeated Justin Moss by majority decision.
