Guillotine Paves Heavyweight Champion Daniel Gallemore’s Way in VFC 57 Main Event
It did not take long for Daniel
Gallemore to retain the Victory Fighting Championship
heavyweight crown, as “Big Kansas” needed just 84 seconds to
extinguish Daniel
James in the VFC 57 main event on Friday at the Kansas
Expocentre in Topeka, Kansas.
James took the fight on less than two weeks’ notice, and Gallemore made certain his title bid ended in disappointment. Gallemore rocked the Chicagoan with a short flurry of punches to the face and forced the challenger to stumble toward a corner, where he met him with a standing guillotine choke. The champion wrenched James’ head and torqued his arms, forcing the tapout.
In the co-main event, Kevin Gray
hoped to open some eyes against Bellator MMA veteran Nick
Mamalis. After a sluggish first round resulted in his being
slammed and nearly submitted with a rear-naked choke, Gray switched
up things in the second. “Pocket Herc” latched onto Mamalis’ neck
during a scramble and did not let go until the fight was over.
Caught in a standing guillotine, Mamalis gave referee Brandon
Pfannenstiel a thumbs up. Soon after, he was asleep.
Pfannenstiel recognized that the Wyoming native was unconscious and
pried Gray off of him at the 3:53 mark of Round 2. The technical
submission brought Gray the vacant VFC flyweight championship.
Meanwhile, Darrick Minner promised a submission in his featherweight battle with Justin Overton and kept his word. The two Kansans met in the center of the cage and tore into each other, but Minner’s submission game proved too potent. Overton escaped the first guillotine, only to be caught in a second. Minner swept the taller man, landed in top position and cranked his hips for the tapout 80 seconds into Round 1.
In an entertaining lightweight battle that could have gone either way, a savage flurry of punches to the head from Josh Pfeifer provided the difference. The combination rocked Cody Carrillo in the second round and nearly led to a finish. Both men landed clean strikes throughout the three-round affair, but Pfeifer was awarded the unanimous decision with 29-28 scores across the board.
Elsewhere, Daron McCant submitted Sharky Slyter in a bantamweight showdown between former training partners. Slyter exploded out of his corner and gunned for an early knockout, only to see his emotional plan backfire. McCant took a slower, more methodical approach and wore down his rival. He eventually moved to Slyter’s back and cinched a rear-naked choke for the tap at 2:57 of the second round.
Finally, featherweight prospect Alex McGowan used a superb transition to land a kimura against Rob Mitchell for a first-round submission. After a scramble, McGowan locked in the kimura, leaned across his body and then changed directions to prompt the tapout. The end came at 3:08 of Round 1.
In other action, Trey Ogden submitted fellow lightweight Chance Thackston with a rear-naked choke at 2:19 of the second round; Dustin Kramer edged Matthew Murray by split decision -- 29-28, 29-28, 28-29 -- in a wild bantamweight affair; and Arnold Berdon toppled Johnnie Roades in another action-packed 135-pound brawl, earning a unanimous decision with 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 marks from the judges.
