One of the sport’s all-time greats will be enshrined in the UFC’s Hall of Fame this summer.

The Las Vegas-based promotion announced on Saturday that Georges St. Pierre will be inducted into the “Modern Wing” as part of the Hall of Fame class of 2020. The former welterweight and middleweight champion will be enshrined during a ceremony streamed on UFC Fight Pass later this year. Normally the UFC Hall of Fame festivities occur in Las Vegas during International Fight Week, but those plans have changed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Georges St-Pierre is a pioneer of Canadian MMA who helped build the sport globally,” UFC President Dana White said. “He is the most famous athlete to ever come out of Canada and one of the greatest martial artists of all-time. We’re proud to induct him into the UFC Hall of Fame Class of 2020.”

Regarded by many as the sport’s pound-for-pound best fighter, St. Pierre will join Forrest Griffin, B.J. Penn, Ronda Rousey, Michael Bisping and Rashad Evans in the “Modern Wing,” which recognizes athletes who turned pro on or after November 17, 2000. Fighters must be retired for at least one year to be eligible for induction.

St. Pierre is one of seven fighters in UFC history to have won a title in two different weight classes. He was a dominant welterweight champion, defending that crown nine times in a row during his second reign before relinquishing the belt to take an indefinite hiatus in 2013. He returned to the Octagon in November 2017, submitting Michael Bisping at UFC 217 to claim the middleweight strap. He announced his retirement at a press conference in 2019.

The Tristar Gym representative owns notable wins over the likes of Matt Hughes (twice), B.J. Penn (twice), Sean Sherk, Frank Trigg, Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves, Josh Koscheck (twice), Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz and Johny Hendricks, among others. He ranks first in UFC history in total strikes landed (2,591), significant ground strikes (461) and takedowns (90). His 20 career triumphs are tied for third most in the promotion and his 13 victories in title fights are the second-most all-time.
