Flyweight Champ Demetrious Johnson Inks Long-Term UFC Contract Extension

Demetrious Johnson won’t be testing free agency waters anytime soon.

The UFC flyweight champion announced during Monday’s edition of "The MMA Hour” that he has signed an eight-fight contract extension with the Las Vegas-based promotion. “Mighty Mouse” had two fights remaining on his previous UFC contract but saw no reason to let that deal run out as a negotiating ploy.

"I think when fighters do that, they want to see what they're worth, but at the same time, if they negotiate with the UFC, and they get what they like, there's no point going and testing free agency," Johnson said. "And the thing is, even Rampage Jackson said it before, nobody treats you better than the UFC.”

Johnson is coming off a first-round round technical knockout victory over Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo in the UFC 197 co-main event on April 23, his eighth consecutive flyweight title defense. The Kirkland, Wash., native earned a reported $195,000 — including a $60,000 win bonus — for his work in the Octagon that night.

Johnson has lost just once in 14 outings since joining the UFC in 2011. That defeat, a five-round unanimous decision loss to Dominick Cruz at UFC Live 6, came at 135 pounds.
