Eight Fighters Suspended After WEC 51

Eight fighters have been handed medical suspensions by the Colorado
Office of Boxing following WEC
51, which took place in Broomfield, Colo. on Sept. 30.
Of the fighters suspended, four of them could be out as long as 180 days. The medical suspensions were confirmed to Sherdog by Office Director Ophelia Duran Tuesday. Duran also relayed that the office was not privy to fighter payout information for the event.
The four fighters who face possible 180-day suspensions are
Jamie
Varner, Mark
Hominick, Mike Thomas
Brown and Antonio
Banuelos.
Varner, who took heavy punishment for three rounds courtesy of nemesis Donald Cerrone, may be cleared early by a physician, but must spend at least 30 days on the shelf regardless.
Hominick, Brown and Banuelos, three fighters who walked away victorious on Sept. 30, have also been served 180-day suspensions. Each may be cleared early by a doctor, however. MMAfighting.com reported that Brown injured his right wrist in his TKO victory over Cole Province, and Antonio Banuelos hurt his left foot in his decision win against Chad George. Banuelos faces the same terms as Varner for his suspension (30-day mandatory suspension). No surprise that Hominick was suspended, as the Canadian bantamweight admitted to fighting with a broken left thumb at the post-fight press conference.
Featherweight challenger Manny Gamburyan and Chan Sung Jung were both slapped with mandatory 90-day suspensions following their knockout losses to Jose Aldo and George Roop, respectively. Also served mandatory suspensions were George (60 days) and Province (90 days).
