The list of fighters who dislike Colby Covington continues to grow after the outspoken UFC welterweight contender criticized his American Top Team gym teammates Jorge Masvidal and Dustin Poirier on a recent appearance on ESPN.
Covington openly said that he would fight his teammate Masvidal and accused him of only being his friend when he wanted something. “Chaos” then turned his attention to Poirier, who was overcome with emotion after his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov over the weekend at UFC 242 (transcribed via MMAMania.com):
“He’s the type of guy that when you are doing something for him, he will use you,” Covington said of Masvidal. “As long as you are doing better than him and you are not helping him out anymore, then he doesn’t care about you.
Prior to the main event at UFC 242, Covington had predicted that “The Eagle” would dominate his teammate Poirier because he wouldn’t be able to defend the takedown. This prediction was allegedly a result of Poirier suggesting Robbie Lawler was a better fighter than Covington in the lead up to their fight.
“He thought Robbie Lawler was a better fighter and he picked him to beat me. Did I get my feelings hurt? No, I went out there and beat him. Dustin needs to stop making excuses and trying to blame me for his loss. Sorry you suck and you’re not the best fighter in the world. There can only be one best in the world and I’m sorry, but I am that guy.”
Covington even went as far as suggesting Poirier’s emotional display at the presser was a put-on.
“I don’t know why he’s acting like a childish little kid. He needs to get a sponsorship from Kleenex with that Emmy Award-winning act at the press conference, crying, ‘Oh my dream ... blah, blah blah.’”
American Top Team owner Dan Lambert might have a few issues on his hands if comments by Poirier are true as “The Diamond” said if he sees “Chaos” at the gym, they will fight (h/t/ Phillyphil9)
“When I see you again at the gym @colbycovmma it’s on site. I promise you”
