Derek Campos Injured; UFC Vet ‘Kevin’ Souza Steps Into Bellator 152 Headliner in Italy

Bellator MMA's transatlantic debut this Saturday has a new main event.

Scheduled headliner Derek Campos has suffered an undisclosed injury and has pulled out of his lightweight bout with Patricky “Pitbull” Freire. Campos will be replaced by UFC veteran Edimilson “Kevin” Souza in the new main event of Bellator 152, which emanates from Pala Alpitour in Torino, Italy on April 16.

MMAJunkie's Mike Bohn initially reported the change Monday. MMAFighting's Guilherme Cruz subsequently confirmed that the 31-year-old Souza has signed a four-fight deal with the company.

Souza, 15-4, put together a 3-1 mark inside the UFC before being choked out by Chas Skelly at UFC “Belfort vs. Henderson 3” last November. The loss marked the end of Souza's Zuffa contract, after which he was not re-signed, prompting the Brazilian boxing specialist to explore free agency. After competing exclusively at 145 pounds in the UFC, the bout with his Brazilian countryman Freire will mark Souza's return to 155 pounds.

Freire, 2-2 in his last four outings, most recently knocked out Ryan Couture in the first round at Bellator 148 in January to bounce back from a split decision loss to Derek Anderson at Bellator 147 eight weeks prior.
