Davis: ‘Wonderbar’ Was Variation from Kimura Series

Phil Davis knew what he was doing.

He didn’t accidentally pin Tim Boetsch’s arm behind his back, grab a second grip and invent a shoulder lock on the spot.

“I know that position very well,” Davis said Monday on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show. “Although I have never called it the ‘Mr. Wonderful’ or like my Twitter fans are calling it now, ‘The Wonderbar.’ I’ve never actually called it that. It’s just a variation off my kimura series that I do.”

Boetsch tapped to the hold 2:55 into the second round of their UFC 123 light heavyweight matchup. Davis credited instructor Lloyd Irvin for helping him win an $80,000 Submission of the Night award.

“I tell people Lloyd Irvin is like a ninja, a modern-day ninja on the ground,” Davis said. “I just picked up his kimura series and ran with it.”

A 2008 NCAA champion wrestler, Davis explained that his pursuit of submissions has become second nature.

“Anytime I’m rolling, grappling, anything, you leave me a wrist, you leave me an arm, and I will take it every single time,” he said. “Not even consciously. … I’m like a robot on the ground. I grab wrists every time. I remember right off the takedown, [Boetsch’s] arm was semi-straight and I grabbed the wrist, boom, straightened it out right away. I was like, ‘Oh, here goes the series.’ I started going through my kimura series and ended up in a Wonderbar.”

While Davis’ submission game is coming along and his wrestling is already there, he’s not worried about staying on the feet just to improve his standup.

“As long as everyone understands that I will take you down when I decide I want to take you down, that makes my standup that much more dangerous. I don’t want anybody to feel like they are safe from a takedown,” he said. “I’m always going to take you down if I get the opportunity too.”

With the win over Boetsch, Davis closed out 2010 with a 4-0 record in the UFC and an 8-0 mark overall. Next up for him is recovering from a cut to his leg he suffered somehow during the fight. He posted a photo on Twitter that showed a significant-looking open laceration, though he called it a “boo-boo” and joked about losing his leg to gangrene.

“Right now I’m mentally breaking the gangrene,” Davis said. “It can’t defeat me.”
