Conor McGregor Charged With Assault After Punching Man in Dublin Bar

Conor McGregor has officially been charged with assault after punching a man in a bar in Dublin this April.

The Independent first reported this news on Friday, stating that McGregor has been served a summons to appear in court on Friday, Oct. 11. If convicted, the Irishman faces a maximum prison sentence of six months, a fine of 1,500 euros ($1,646), or both. The news was later confirmed by ESPN.

In August, video of McGregor striking this man in a Dublin bar on April 6 surfaced. One week later, McGregor appeared on ESPN to take responsibility for his actions.

In his interview with Ariel Helwani, he stated, "In reality, it doesn't matter what happened there. I was in the wrong. That man deserved to enjoy his time in the pub without having it to end the way it did. And although it was five months ago, I tried to make amends, and I made amends back then. But that does not even matter. I was in the wrong."

This incident was not the first time "Notorious" had been embroiled with legal drama, as he was arrested in March for smashing a fan's phone in Miami. He later reached a settlement with the fan. He is also reportedly under investigation for an alleged sexual assault that took place in December.

McGregor (21-4) last competed inside the Octagon at UFC 229, where he was forced to submit to a neck crank from Khabib Nurmagomedov in the fourth round. The first simultaneous two-division champion, he knocked out Jose Aldo and Eddie Alvarez for the featherweight and lightweight titles, respectively. He also headlined a pair of massive events against Nate Diaz, and after winning both belts, McGregor went on to take a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, where he lost by 10th round TKO. It is unclear if and when he will return to the Octagon, as he retired in March for the second time in his career.
