Chan Sung Jung to Undergo Eye Surgery Following UFC Busan Victory

It won’t cause a prolonged absence, but Chan Sung Jung will undergo eye surgery after his first-round stoppage of Frankie Edgar in the UFC Fight Night 165 headliner.

“The Korean Zombie” revealed at Saturday’s post-fight press conference that he has been seeing “double vision” and will have a corrective procedure that will likely sideline him for the first part of 2020.

“Those that follow me on Instagram might know, but currently I have an eye condition that makes me see double,” Jung said. “Right now, everyone in this room, I’m seeing double of everything. I have double vision. It’s not a huge, major surgery, but is still gonna take about a couple, three months to recover.”

The condition did not seem to affect Jung on Saturday, as he overwhelmed Edgar from the outset en route to stopping the former lightweight champion with punches at the 3:18 mark of the opening stanza. Regarding his performance, Jung simply said, “We humans adjust to things.”

As dominant as he was, Jung expressed some regret about not being able to showcase his skills for longer than he did. The 32-year-old South Korean has scored back-to-back first-round stoppages of Edgar and Frankie Edgar after losing to Yair Rodriguez in heartbreaking fashion in November 2018.

“I am really happy. This is my present just in time for Christmas. I wanted to fight Edgar for 25 minutes,” Jung said. “This part I regret, but I guess it's relieving. I've been traveling back and forth for 10 weeks. I deserved this win.

Fighting on home soil for the first time since 2008, Jung admitted to feel a little extra pressure. However, “The Korean Zombie” has been involved in headlining fights in his last six Octagon appearances, so he was able to adjust to the moment relatively quickly.

“It did give me a lot of pressure to fight at home. For my last fights, I was the main event and I was fighting abroad. It is different, but it prepared me to fight tonight a main event, in front of my home crowd,” he said. “Going into the octagon, I don’t pay a lot of attention to the crowd around me. I’m completely focused on the fight, and tonight was the same. I’m really happy with the result tonight, and I’m glad I could put on a show for the fans. I’m really thankful that so many people showed up today to support me and let’s do it again, this time in Seoul.”
