Catching Up with Andre Pederneiras: Future of ‘Jacare,’ Aldo vs. Munhoz and More

“Dede” Pederneiras had a few thoughts about his fighters on Friday.

Manager of Ronaldo Souza and leader of famed Brazilian camp Nova Uniao, Andre Pederneiras spoke with Sherdog on Friday morning. Before starting the conversation, however, Pederneiras wanted to clarify that Souza was not cut by the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

“That was the last fight of his contract, and UFC did not renew,” Pederneiras explained. “Being fired is when the show cut you in the middle of your contract, that was not what happened.”

Asked about his plans for the future of “Jacare,” Pederneiras just wanted to give his fighter time to think.

“It’s not the right time to talk about the future. All Jacare needs now is take his time to recover from the bruise, take time with his family. When he is fine, we will have that talk. Most important thing is to take that decision calmly.”

“Dede” also discussed the possible fight between Jose Aldo and Pedro Munhoz at UFC 265 on Aug. 7 that was announced on Thursday. The revered coach confirmed what had been made public to this point, but was confident the match would come to fruition.

“We have not signed yet but both sides verbally agreed, so it must happen,” Pederneiras remarked simply.

The Carlson Gracie black belt also revealed to Sherdog that Munhoz was not the first plan for Aldo’s opponent.

“We always avoid fights with Brazilians,” Pederneiras admitted, “Due to Aldo’s history as the longest featherweight champion in the organization, we prefer to choose former champions like him. We tried T.J. [Dillashaw], [Cody] Garbrandt and Dominick [Cruz] but all of them already had a plan. Unfortunately, our agendas did not fit, so we accepted UFC’s offer of Pedro Munhoz, [as] he is also a ranked opponent, and our main goal is that Aldo retires with the bantamweight belt.”

Chosen by Rafael dos Anjos as head coach, Pederneiras pointed out two opponents that he would love to see the ex-lightweight champ face in the future.

“I think Michael Chandler would provide a great fight with Rafael, if I could choose, he would be my choice, but Justin Gaethje would also be a great opponent, so it’s up to UFC,” the leader of Nova Uniao concluded.
