'Canelo' Alvarez and Callum Smith Make Weight Ahead of Middleweight Title Tilt

Boxing’s biggest star returns this weekend.

Saul Alvarez will fight for the first time since splitting with Golden Boy and will take on Callum Smith. Two titles will be on the line as Smith is putting up his World Boxing Association super middleweight belt, while the World Boxing Council’s vacant title is also up for grabs.

Like many, 2020 has not gone as “Canelo” would have liked, with this appearance his first first trip to the ring this year. Alvarez (53-1, 36 KO) is coming off an impressive 2019 campaign that saw him win a clear-cut unanimous decision over Daniel Jacobs. After claiming three middleweight titles from Jacobs, Alvarez moved up to light heavyweight to knock out Sergey Kovalev for the World Boxing Organization belt. The pound-for-pound great has a personal history with his opponent, previously knocking out Smith’s older brother Liam Smith in 2016. Alvarez looked great on the scales, and came in at 168 pounds exactly.

The Brit is the naturally larger fighter, and will look to notch the biggest win of his career. Smith (27-0, 19 KO) has a perfect record, although his last fight came with some controversy as many observers thought John Ryder deserved a decision. However, all three judges saw the bout for Smith, and he retained his WBA strap as a result. Smith’s most impressive feat as a pro was winning the World Boxing Super Series’ super middleweight tournament, which saw him knock out George Groves and earn decision victories over Nieky Holzken and Erik Skoglund. The Liverpool native stepped on the scales at 168 pounds on the dot.

The last major boxing match of 2020 will air live on Dazn starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, with the main event taking place around 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
