‘Broke as Hell’ Joanne Calderwood to Receive Post-Fight Bonus, New UFC Contract

Strawweight striker Joanne Calderwood turned in one of the finest performances of her career last Saturday at UFC Fight Night “MacDonald vs. Thompson.”

However, despite a back-and-forth battle which culminated in a decisive third-round finish of Valerie Letourneau, Calderwood did not receive one of the UFC’s traditional post-fight bonuses.

After being passed up for a $50,000 check at the post-fight press conference, a dispirited Calderwood took to social media to express her disappointment, sporting a baseball cap with the words “Broke As Hell.”

“Gutted I didn’t get the bonus tonight,” Calderwood wrote on Instagram, “but I’m not afraid to go home work and save so I can get back to [Tristar Gym] asap and hopefully be back in the octagon soon.”

After being bombarded with a torrent of backlash in support of Calderwood, UFC President Dana White said Tuesday on the “Unfiltered” podcast that he will reward Calderwood, who won the first women’s flyweight bout in UFC history.

“She will be bonused for that fight,” White said. “There were so many good fights that night, people were going crazy. Me and Lorenzo were saying, ‘How the hell did that skip us? She should have got a bonus.

“In that 115-pound division, you don’t see finishes the way she finished Valerie,” White added. “Valerie went five rounds with Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Joanna didn’t do that to her. We’re going to take care of her, and we’re going to sign her to a new deal.”
