Boxing Video: Gervonta Davis Destroys Hugo Ruiz to Retain 130-Pound Title

It wasn’t the matchup the boxing world had been waiting for and it’s doubtful that the original pairing would have ended this way.

Gervonta Davis was slated to face former two-division world champion Abner Mares in the main event of a Showtime-televised boxing card Saturday, but Mares withdrew earlier in the week due to a detached retina. Enter late replacement Hugo Ruiz and the sewn-together featured bout was over as soon as it began inside the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.

Davis (21-0) scored his 20th professional knockout by obliterating Ruiz in the first round. “Tank” was his typical aggressive self and bullied the former champ around the ring. When Ruiz (39-5, 33 KOs) backed into a corner late in the stanza, Davis unfurled a sizzling straight left to the head, followed by a right hook. Ruiz crumbled to the canvas and battled back to his feet, but he was on such wobbly legs that referee Jack Reiss waived it off. The end came at the 2:59 mark, allowing Davis to retain his WBA super featherweight title.
