Boxing: Eleider Alvarez, Sergey Kovalev On Weight for Pivotal Rematch

It’s not a stretch to say that Sergey Kovalev’s career is on the ropes and Eleider Alvarez wants to knock him through them.

The two met last August when Kovalev, a former undisputed light heavyweight champion, was on the comeback trail after dropping back-to-back bouts to the now-retired Andre Ward. The Dagestani powerhouse had won two straight bouts via knockout and seemed like he had regained a foothold on the 175-pound division.

Kovalev (32-3-1, 28 KOs) was in control of his first bout with Alvarez and had his way for six rounds. However, Alvarez (24-0, 12 KOs) turned the tides in the seventh and dropped “Krusher” three times before scoring a TKO 2:45 into the round. Just like that, Kovalev was considered washed up and damaged goods while the Colombian skyrocketed to the top of the division.

Almost six months later and Kovalev is ready to not only win back the WBO title he lost to “Storm,” he’s ready to prove that he still can dominate the light heavyweight class and add to his Hall of Fame-worthy legacy. The two will face off in the main event of a card televised on ESPN+ at Ford Center at the Star on Frisco, Texas, and at Friday’s weigh-ins, both men came in on point.

Kovalev was the first of the two to weigh-in and when the Russian climbed onto the scale, he nailed it. Kovalev officially checked in at 174 pounds. Alvarez followed suit and clocked in at 174.8 pounds, setting the stage for the biggest rematch thus far of 2019.

Televised action begins tomorrow on ESPN+ at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
