Boston City Council Bans Spectators Under 16 from Attending MMA Events Without Adult

The Boston City Council Wednesday resolved to ban spectators under the age of 16 from attending either amateur or professional mixed martial arts events in the Massachusetts state capital without being accompanied by an adult.

The resolution, which was posted online by The Republican reporter Garrett Quinn, is the amended version of an original proposal that sought to ban spectators under the age of 18 from attending MMA events in the city of Boston. According to Quinn, the resolution passed unanimously.

Proposed by Council President Stephen J. Murphy, the resolution drew the ire of UFC President Dana White last week while he was promoting UFC Fight Night 26. That event, which took place at the TD Garden in Boston, was headlined by Chael Sonnen’s first-round submission victory over former light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua.

White and the UFC were forced to jump through several hoops in order to make the Aug. 17 show happen, including securing social security numbers for every international fighter on the card. Though White was initially uncertain whether the promotion would return to Boston given the difficulties in promoting Fight Night 26, the UFC boss stated at the post-fight press conference that the organization would indeed come back to Beantown in the future.
